Kirk/William Shatner Apprecation Thread

I thought I start apprecation thread on William Shatner since there wasn't one. This is the thread you can discuss on about his role as Kirk or other roles he did or if you just love him as an actor.Or if you loved other projects he might of done, you can also post pictures here as well.So if you just love this guy, come discuss your thoughts.

Thanks for the thread! We've been checking our bluray sets and going through them one by one, and I'm just agog at how beautiful Bill is in TOS. It's funny, but my appreciation for Chris Pine's Kirk has ignited a renewed appreciation for Bill's Kirk. He was my favorite anyway. The two of them were both wonderful; I guess I'm just a Kirk fan!

No problem,I thought since there wasn't one for Shatner that I make one.He is after all the one who started it all.If it wasn't for him there would be no new Kirk(Chris Pine)

I actually prefer TOS Kirk to nuKirk. Shatner just had such charisma; as Kirk, he exudes leadership and masculinity. I was watching Charlie X again last night and Kirk is fearless. After seeing Charlie take down two security guards, he firmly tells him, "Go to your quarters or I'll pick you up and carry you there." Wow! Jim doesn't play around when it comes to the safety of his ship and crew.

I have never understood all the Kirk/Shatner-bashing. Shatner always seemed to me to be a decent enough guy with a good sense of humor, and Kirk was an outstanding character. Somehow Shatner managed to bring together the qualities, both good and bad, that made an effective leader. No one could doubt his brains and courage, and he was always open to suggestions from his crew, and especially from Spock and McCoy, of course. Heck, it says something that his was a character who could make friends of two beings so very different as those two!

Shatner sold the show as far as I'm concerned. He put more heart and gravitas into his performance in the pilot than any three actors combined. There's a damned good reason why he considered himself the star - because that's what he was. As much as Nimoy, Kelley, Doohan and the rest were vital parts of the overall mix, the show would not have been as popular without Shatner. He took the lead in nearly every story, and anyone who really takes the time to watch his work can see what a dedicated and detailed performer he is. He put in a lot of subtle shadings, things you only really appreciate upon repeat viewings. Even such over the top explosions like "I'm Captain Kirk!" in The Enemy Within are worthy of note. This wasn't some guy screaming at the top of his lungs - watch it again, over and over - the control of the voice, the pressure he put on his face, and how he reels it back in after the big scream. Unlike any "evil duplicate" story of the era, this was an animal in a man's body. This wasn't "Admiral Nelson brainwashed by Russians."

Even later episodes, like The Enterprise Incident: watch him as he slowly unhinges at the end of act one. He's tense, twitchy, and builds his anger into hysteria. Granted, he had his off days, particularly when a director wouldn't take the time to bring him down a notch. But most often than not, Shatner was the energy in the series, even when he was feuding with Nimoy or Doohan hated him, his likeable personality came through. The chemistry he had with the others was amazing. He also threw an amazing punch and in a role like Kirk, that is vital.

I always thought Kirk was the most interesting of the big two characters. Spock was - and is - an amazing character, but he works best when he's interacting with Kirk. Kirk, however, was interesting no matter who he was with. This is borne out when watching any of the earlier first season episodes when Nimoy was relegated to more of the background and Shatner got the main stories.

Personally, I don't care how he is in person, it's Kirk that matters, and as Kirk he's excelled and Chris Pine doesn't come close to having his presence.

Anyway, most people who "imitate" Shatner are actually imitating Kevin Pollack and the like. If Shatner were anything like they portray him, he'd never been able to make a living as an actor.

^Well said. I re-watched the entire TOS recently, and Shatner shines. And he is THE star of the show. Period.

I love both Pine was brilliant as a young captain Kirk but Shatner will always be Captain Kirk he was brilliant in TOS and very professional, mature I would like to see Pine's Kirk to grow in those areas. and more of the trio relationship that made TOS special.

I've always appreciated Shatner's quirky, dry sense of humor. I think that's the real Bill Shatner coming through...no scripting. He makes these outrageous statements (on the TOS DVD extras) without giving it away with a "wink and a nod".

Another Kirk fan here--both NuKirk and the Original, actually. Something that's been pointed out a few times here on these boards is that Chris Pine nailed Shatner's Kirk in that one scene at the very end when he walks over to the captain's chair and says "Bones!"

Very, very well said! :techman:

I have been watching Trek since I was a wee lad, and I always thought he got the raw deal from the critics. There are always cracks about his playboyish behavior with women and the way Bill delivered lines among a zillion other things.

The way I saw it Earth's deep space exploration was still a toddler when he was sent to pasture, and as most humans do he thought on his toes and did the best he could.

I have always wondered what Soval would have said about Kirk's methods had the Vulcan been aliver or just present during Kirk's years.

Now about Shatner, I don't think there could have been a better actor to take that role. It seems though that over the last umpteen years it has been said that a few of his Trek costars did not think fondly of him.

I am sure the had their reasons, but overall when Trek is mentioned usually Kirk is what they associate the show with. Well that's my two cents.

I enjoy his page at Fametracker, even though it hasn't been updated in five years. It rated him as "Super Indestructible Icon" and declared, "He's had entire careers before breakfast."

I am going to post some pictures of William Shatner as Kirk ok

hope you enjoy these ladies

As a kid, I wanted to be Kirk. I didn't want to be a sports figure or some guy changing the way we do things in America, I wanted to be Kirk. I wanted the hair, the confidence, the smile, the attitude. What's always amazed me was that Shater, in interviews, comes off as soft spoken, halting, even a little nevrous (when he's not doing his deadpan bits on the DVD extras). But when you see him as JTK, it seems really natural.

Chris Pine: don't get me wrong, he was really good in a role meant to show Young Kirk developing into the Kirk we knew. One of you pointed out the "Bones" bit, but the one I spooted came sooner when he and Spock are in the time ship and Spock is asking Kirk give a message to Uhura, inturrupting him with "Spock!" Perfect. Oh, and crossing his legs in the captain's chair. Nicely done. I have to tell you, the "buckle up" bit brought it down a notch. Not quite Kirk-like, IMO

As good as Pine is, Bill Shatner created the role and nobody's gonna do it better. These guys just have to be careful not to overplay things, like the "cockiness" which to me was actually just "confidence." But there ya go.

I just watched Jim vanquish the Gorn with a bamboo cannon -- something ordinary mortals on "Mythbusters" couldn't figure out! Kirk rulz.

^

Watched Trouble w/ Tribbles last night - my fav and I was struck by how absolutely lovely he was - I find the older I get the better he looks!
