Kirk & the Orion cadet- was it appropriate? Indecent? Cool?

I think you guys a being a bit harsh with Yeoman Randi. Thankfully it sailed over the heads of the kids I took.

It was a Star Trek movie. I was wanting to pre-screen it for my niece and nephew. My mom's response to that - "It is Star Trek." - Insert idiot facial expressions.

I took them to my first viewing. Ages 6 and 10. They were angels. Kids acting out in theaters is not the issue methinks.

I personally felt that comment made Uhura seem a bit small. That is why I hated it.

What I found offensive about the Galia scene was it implied it was ok (in Kirk's mind, granted) for him to play the field, but he seemed put off by Galia's "level of activity."

That was intended to be funny. Sort of a "goes around comes around" type of thing. And I think Kirk's reaction was more surprised/chagrined than "put off".

Indeed. And Uhura's comment about farm animals was intended to be playful and flirty.

At least that's how I saw it.

^ oh yes i agree. And as an adult, i laughed. And i loved the scene with Gaila. Again, my very first post about this subject was that i was on the fence about it, only as a parent who tried to bring my kids up knowing that sex should be between adults and NOT with farm animals. S'all i was trying to say.

He did kind of have a WTH look on his face. I guess I just hated the whole scene. It seemed so contrived...Uhura's roommate...listening post info.

As for the farm animals quip - My first reaction was "oh, good comeback." Second reaction was, "dang that was kinda mean."

Really, that wasnt bad compared to what little kids see on television. Truth is, what i objected to was the "Sex with farm animals" line.

i cannot imagine how i would have explained that one to my child if she/he were with me and 6 years old...

Again, you'd be the one taking your 6-year-old kid to a PG-13 film. If you don't like explaining such things, then don't take the kid to anything but G films. You seem to think that any film below a R rating should be sterile enough from sexuality and language that you can take a first-grader. Gee, maybe if the film is rating PG-13 you should leave the kid home until they are older... and your fellow moviegoers will thank you too.

Um, can you please sit down for a minute?

First off, i would have expected a PG13 rating due to the sci fi 'violence'. Not because people are talking about having sex with farm animals.

Secondly, I do not HAVE a six year old. My kids are 25 and 15. But as someone who brought my kids to Star Trek movies just like any other Trekker parent would like to, i would be uncomfortable with a line such as that one, if i had my 6 yr old kid with me.

And, you should know, when MY kids were 6, they behaved themselves like much older children when we were at the movies or anywhere else. I tend to think they were more well behaved and respectful of the people around them than you are being right now. Please do not presume to know me or my children.

Such big words from such a small small mind.

Geez, i thought this was a place for open discussion and not a place where you get attacked for your thoughts and opinions.
Open discussion is fine and dandy, as long as it's the thoughts and opinions which are attacked or criticized and not the person offering them.

I think that SonicRanger may have misunderstood what you meant in the earlier post and was (as is not entirely unusual for him) somewhat sarcastic in his response. I think you clarified things quite satisfactorily here by responding to the substance of his post, but the "big words... small small mind" dig doesn't add anything useful to your post and would have been better omitted.

Edit:

As for the farm animals quip - My first reaction was "oh, good comeback." Second reaction was, "dang that was kinda mean."
Yeah, it was a bit mean, but I think it did two things: A) It set up Kirk's comeback, which was a mixture of snappy response and self-deprecating humor, and B) set up the underlying Starfleet/townie conflict which we soon afterward saw escalating into into a brawl. Really, I think that the bar scene (and the following Kirk/Pike talk) gives us, in the space of a few minutes, a pretty good introduction to the characters of both Kirk and Uhura, as well as illustrating the divide which exists between rural Iowa and the world of Starfleet -- the divide which Kirk must decide to cross in order to begin to grow from dirtside punk into James T. Kirk, starship captain.

And again the film was rated PG-13.

Some people enjoy sex with farm animals. Is that so wrong??

^ I think she's explained that she understands the movie's rating. As for sex with farm animals, perhaps you ought to ask the animals how they feel about it.

They'd probably prefer it to us electrocuting them, chopping them into little bits, and eating them.

I've never heard any complaints..

Though there is a restraining order involving a rooster that I can't talk about.

I am sitting, thanks. Rarely do I try to stand and use a laptop.

First off, i would have expected a PG13 rating due to the sci fi 'violence'. Not because people are talking about having sex with farm animals.

The Star Trek movie poster states that it is rating PG-13 for "Sci-Fi Action and Violence and Brief Sexual Content." Therefore, such an expectation is simply uninformed.

Secondly, I do not HAVE a six year old. My kids are 25 and 15. But as someone who brought my kids to Star Trek movies just like any other Trekker parent would like to, i would be uncomfortable with a line such as that one, if i had my 6 yr old kid with me.

Please notice I used "You'd be..." as in "You would be..." as in the word used in a conditional statement.

But you did write:

Yeoman Randi said:
"I remember being very uncomfortable with the bathtub scene in Insurrection and the violation scene in Nemesis as i had my son with me and he was young at that time."

If Insurrection came out 11 years ago and Nemesis came out 7 years ago, then your 15-year-old son would have been 4 and 8, respectively, at those films.

Insurrection was rated PG for "sci-fi action violence, mild language and sensuality."

Nemesis was rated PG-13 for "sci-fi action violence and peril and a scene of sexual content."

It seems that not expecting sexually themed scenes is simply ignorance.

Such big words from such a small small mind.

I believe M'Sharak has already pointed out that this constitutes a flame (i.e., personal attack) that was disproportional to anything I stated about your opinions.

Geez, i thought this was a place for open discussion and not a place where you get attacked for your thoughts and opinions.

Yes, that's what we are doing here: discussing. Anyone can post their thoughts and opinions here, but no one can expect that their thoughts and opinions are so great that no one will disagree with them.

M' Sharak: Yes, you are right. I do apologize. And i am not be sarcastic, i mean it most sincerely.

And so, rather than be accused of beating a dead horse, and go on with my personal feelings on the subject, i move on to other threads.

Yeah, that's a thing about the interwebs: with six billion of them out there, you can be sure at least one of them will disagree with you. :D

LOL this reminds me when my mother took me to see Risky Business.
I was about 11 or 12 I think. Needless to say she was horrified, mortified and bunch of other "fied's" and very very uncomfortable. She wanted to walk out of the theater but I convinced her to stay (I think). There was no discussion about it afterwards. Poor woman couldn't even talk to me about it.

Could have been worse (in a good way)...

My mom took me to see Excalibur. Now that was a fun conversation. "Mom, wouldn't having sex with a guy in full armor be uncomfortable?"

SHUT UP! (But she was laughing- and she did answer the question.:)

Well, there was that time in school assembly, when somebody switched out a porno flick for the public-service film.

It's amazing how long that thing went on before the people in charge figured it out.

Indecent...seeing young Kirk in his underwear did nothing for the story. It could have been as simple as getting caught kissing the Orion woman. Star Trek needs to be for the entire family, not a select few who can view a select rating.

Gotta disagree. TOS was full of scary monsters, violence, and sexy situations. Star Trek is about grown-ups in space. It was never supposed to be a Disney production.

Not everything in the world needs to be "family-friendly." IMHO.

That's fine..we can agree to disagree. I would just like to see Star Trek NOT follow society so much that it incorporates all that sex. Sex is in about every show and movie out there, I'd like to see Star Trek to be different. And what is wrong with Disney stuff? High School Musical movies broke records. There is nothing wrong with doing things without sex if done correctly, it can be very profitable.

It was very indecent. I mean, in the whole film, all those women were showing their real hair in public and to men who weren't their husbands. In TOS, the women had the decency to wear wigs and hide their real hair so that it is only seen privately. Only wigs or scarves should be worn in public! In this film, women just had their real hair showing for everyone to see! Indecent!
