I thought it was more of a case that Spock was still dealing with the issue of having been resurrected, so that he wouldn't have been the same Spock as before.I do think that DeForest Kelley gave one one of his best performances as McCoy in this movie and Leonard Nimoy played a Spock with a certain kind of warmth that still fit the character. And Shatner himself was channeling in the Kirk from the TV series, but one that matured over the years and had mellowed a bit from his experiences...
I definitely agree about DeForest Kelley -- he elevated what he was given. I can't say the same, though, about Nimoy and Shatner -- they seem off. Shatner, as I mentioned before, seems really off on Kirk in the brig scene -- to some extent, he's almost bringing in Kirk from "A Piece of the Action," which is a weird choice for the scene. Nimoy seems uncomfortable with the "humor" most of the time, and it shows in his portrayal of Spock.

I think that he meant: Like Generations, TFF felt more like a long episode, not an epic movie.
