Kirk Sucked!

Kirk really sucked in Star Trek V. I like Kirk but his character was laughable, first he falls off of a mountain, then he is called in to rescue the hostages but instead of negotiating or even exploring other options he tries to take them by force in some half ass raid that gets a bunch of people killed and fails miserably.

Next not only does he fail to save the hostages but he loses command of the Enterprise. He then tries to attack Sybak but fails yet again. On top of all of this he still comes across as arrogant the entire time. I am not saying this as an insult to the character overall just the horribly written Kirk in TFF.

Get back to your studies and at least get a girl or "boy" friend....:guffaw:

the script was the problem...
It was an "OK" script,...followed the BIG three how it should have been followed. Just because the "lesser" characters were portrayed, IMO, normally as in TOS, and added humor to them is "most" others problems.

I agree, the script needed more work, but it is still one of my favorite Star Trek movies because I can see the potential that was there...sometimes it seems to be disliked mainly because Shatner was the director too.:vulcan:

I should get a life? I am not really sure why your panties are in such a bunch(as your apparently such a fucking idiot that you forgot to say why you got so butt hurt) but their is certainly no need to insult me. And if you do feel like being a dick you could at least show some imagination, what are you going to do now talk about my mom.

To Captain Mike, tone it down. To Silver Roc... you have earned a warning for flaming. Please don't call other posters "f***ing idiots," please.

No, since I know you are not here to engage in intellectual conversation I am done with your thread.

assuming this thread is meant seriously...

Kirk only "failed" to stop Sybok on the ship because Spock ended up being the one in the position to shoot, and wouldn't because Sybok was his half-brother.

He also is the one to resist Sybok's "brainwashing/manipulation" and sees through the fake God first.

At least he didn't inexplicably leave the shields down in a potentially hostile situation in THIS movie...

The only time Kirk really seems out of character to me is in brig scene -- it's hard to tell, though, if the script or acting is to blame.

Otherwise Kirk's portraying is pretty far down on my list of TFF complaints. Is it bad that I actually liked the cuts SyFy made to the film last night?

The thing is, Shat did a pretty good job (by the way, the cinematography was gorgeous). You can see that he does understand the characters, particularly the Big Three, it's just a comedy of errors took place in trying to make the film. The commentary sheds a ton of light on everything. People say he's making excuses, but you listen to everything that happened, and your movie would come out half done, too. Of course, that being said, the soundtrack is simply magnificent. I think it was Jerry's best.

the script was the problem...

While I rank TFF as 10th out of the 11 movies, I don't dislike it despite the problem with the script mainly Sybock relation to Spock and the centre of the galaxy thing. I find TFF a nice character movie with some witty and charming moments, the film keeps the humor of TVH.

I love the bits in the forest at the start and the scenes showing Spock's birth/fathers reaction and McCoys aid in his own fathers death are some of the most powerful scenes in all of TREK. The problem is the script was never polished properly and its a pity.

Star Trek V was the movie with the most heart in it and the one aimed the most at casual fans (even more so than Star Trek IV, IMO), so naturally it's considered by more serious fans the weakest of the TOS movies...

Looking at the movie several times recently, I think Star Trek V was the one closest to being a classic TOS episode in both story and tone, probably comparable to "Who Mourns for Adonais?" and "The Way to Eden." Some of the VFXs were weak, particularly towards the end, but the movie otherwise was quite cinematic and really dealt with the long-standing friendship between the "big three" as well as the fact that neither of them are young men anymore. I do think that DeForest Kelley gave one one of his best performances as McCoy in this movie and Leonard Nimoy played a Spock with a certain kind of warmth that still fit the character. And Shatner himself was channeling in the Kirk from the TV series, but one that matured over the years and had mellowed a bit from his experiences...

Do you think TFF felt more like a long episode and less like an epic movie, the way Generations did?
I think it ultimately played out like a long episode, but there were some bits and pieces--namely some cinematic shots of some locales--that took advantage of it being a big screen production (if only because a big screen camera was used for them)...

I definitely agree about DeForest Kelley -- he elevated what he was given. I can't say the same, though, about Nimoy and Shatner -- they seem off. Shatner, as I mentioned before, seems really off on Kirk in the brig scene -- to some extent, he's almost bringing in Kirk from "A Piece of the Action," which is a weird choice for the scene. Nimoy seems uncomfortable with the "humor" most of the time, and it shows in his portrayal of Spock.

Funny, when I see it I get the opposite. I like the way the big 3 handle the humor, and the comfort they seem to have together.

he tries to take them by force in some half ass raid that gets a bunch of people killed

Who dies? We see one of the raiding party get shot in the leg and Kirk throws the tri-titted cat lady into the "pool" table. She looks dead, but she could just be unconscious. Since her face in the water, she might have drowned later, but that's the last we see of her.

People, people, when will you learn? Cussing is for TNZ only!
