Kirk must shine....

I don't care what anyone says about TOS, or about this new movie...but I have always said that Star Trek is at its best when Kirk is at his best...Kirk must be the driving force in this movie, just as he was when TOS had great episodes, and when the movie's were at their best (Khan to be more exact)....And from what I saw of the trailer, JJabrams seems to have come to this conclusion..the 'non fans' he is aiming this movie must come out of this movie believing that Kirk will become the great hero...and he must be seen as the one who carries the movie...

Everything else, from the Enterprise, to the Romulans, and yes, even Spock, is all background music to me...KIRK must shine...

Unfortunately I believe you are correct but this is the exact turn off for me and why Trek lost its appeal for some. After TOS, instead of a ship of devoted, exceptional, talented, interesting, idealistic, inspiring people exploring the galaxy with cleverly written, thought provoking yet action packed episodes, it focused on "Kirk - the greatest hero in the galaxy" and lost its appeal for me. A large part of Trek's appeal was the relationships between the characters as equals, not hero worshipers.

I want my kids to watch movies like TOS was - not Star Wars. The bad-ass hero worship shows are for the kiddies. My teenaged sons think the trailer looks like it is trying so hard to appeal to their age group that it will miss the mark just like Speedracer did. Teens know when they are being played.

Exactly -- that was the beauty of the triumvirate of Kirk/Spock/McCoy.

When a decision is to be made, all people have their subconscious that tells them what to do (id, ego, and superego -- if you want). But in a TV or movie drama, it's really hard to know what's going on inside someone's head without always hearing the character's thoughts in a voice-over, or have that character talk to himself (like a cartoon superhero) -- both of these approaches can be annoying.

But Star Trek had these three very different individuals who could bounce ideas around and argue about decisions, and act as a surrogate "id/ego/superego".

Instead of a subconscious, we have the triumvirate.

I think you are completely and utterly wrong - the whole point is going to be that neither Spock or Kirk can do this thing alone, they need each other and provide balance - and McCoy will be there to point this out and complete the trinity.

Actually you've just cheered me up!! I hope you are correct but I did not get that impression from the trailer. The character who is starting to appeal to me with this reboot is McCoy. I hope we see him in that dynamics that form the trio too.

Perhaps I need to focus on the fact that trailers are just advertisement and may not echo the film very well. I hope so but my kids kind of "saw through" the trailer. They would like Trek better IF what you say is the theme rather than my suspicions or what the Scorpio wants. There are enough Spidermans, Batmans, James Bonds, Luke Skywalkers, Indiana Jones etc out there that Trek needs to keep its triumverant, interdependence aspect.
