Hence why from season 3 onwards Jean-Luc was a little different (nobody seems to complain about THIS change) AND he got his wish with episodes like "Captain's Holiday".
I mean, I can. While I found Picard difficult to care about in Season 1 and 2 in 3 and forward I found some of the stories strange or mind boggling for him to be doing. Going on infiltration missions, fighting off terrorists single handily, among others.

I didn't watch the show all the way through but I certainly saw some odd sides to Picard.

Oh, I'm right with you. I go against the majority of the fandom with this, but I prefer season 1 and 2 Jean-Luc over later Jean-Luc by a large margin. While I do understand that Sir Patrick felt the character was stagnating at the end of the second season I don't think it was necessary to change him in the way they changed him. I liked him much better when he was mostly grumpy.

For me neither Kirk nor Picard have been out of character.
Also thanks to the fact that both, William Shatner and Patrick Stewart are great actors.
Sure people change when they get older and with their experiences.
But out of character, I don't think so...
