It's under the What Could Have Been tab in the Franchise home of POTA and the Trivia tab in KotPOTA.

Quote - "The film was originally conceived as another reboot trilogy with no ties to POTA or the Caesar trilogy before being refitted to be set in the Caesar universe."

Which as I said is not the same thing as it starting out as an unrelated script that was turned into POTA.

Writers Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa responded to a fan's question during a Q&A on Reddit: "Thank you so much. The next Apes movie is in production... Stay tuned."

There's a Disney event called D23 this year. Even if it's not announced at CinemaCon, it might be announced there.

5 months have passed, I think this news is true and they will announce this movie in the summer at D23 or before D23. With a new director, the 4th film will be made in a cheaper way.

Plot details are being kept under wraps other than the film making a return to the planet where Apes are the superior species ruling all. While not confirmed, sources tell Deadline this will not be a continuation of the most recent pic Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but a new original story that Shakman and Friedman are developing. Friedman also penned that script along with Silver and Jaffa.
Why?

A shame but I love Matt Shakman's work so I'm sure I'll be ultimately fine with.

I think I'll be more bummed out that we won't get any follow up with Dichen Lachhman's character because I'm such a big fan of hers.

The article over on IGN theorized that it might be because Wes Ball has moved over to the Zelda movie for Sony & Nintendo, and they don't want to wait for him.
I'm hoping there's still a possibility of getting the Kingdom sequel at some point. I really liked that version of the POTA world, and was looking forward getting some of the lose threads from it getting picked up. I'd even be happy with a book or comic if it's definitely not going to happen in a movie.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes received good reactions from both fans and critics, and it also did well at the box office, so why are they going with a new story instead of continuing it?
Oh! I thought you were asking why Matt Shakman. My mistake. :ouch:

All four of the new Planet of the Apes movies were a progression of the last. We just saw humans reestablish communications

Now that's all wiped and we start over or don't follow up those events?

I hope it at least takes place in the current version of the POTA world even if it doesn't continue Kingdom's storyline and isn't a complete from scratch reboot.

I don't need it to be a direct sequel, but I do hope that cryptic tweet means that they'll at least be continuing the previous film/s in general.

But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed right at this exact moment. I don't think I like Shakman's approach to storytelling especially.

Fingers crossed.

Edit: Just so long as they don't "do the original film" again. I hope they never jump forward to that.

My prediction is that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will have a sequel that focuses entirely on a completely new team, and that the characters from the fourth film will appear in the movie as supporting characters. Or they might make a spin-off film until Wes Ball is available to direct the 5th and 6th installments.

Looking back at my review of the film (which I haven't watch since the first time), what I want to see continued the most is the established sociological development among the apes, even if we don't see the same characters again. I would like to see Noa again but not as hard set on him as I was with Caesar (regardless of Serkis). I don't care about the humans one way or the other, aside from Dichen Lachman fulfilling the role she was clearly cast for.

About time they rebooted the actual story in this new timeline. Now is Mark Whalberg returning? :)
