Kindle equals PADDs?

This may not be the right forum for this so move it if you must.

Does anyone know of any e-book readers that can have PADD skins uploaded to them? Yes, I'm that big a geek.

That'd be EPIC if there were, but to my knowledge e-paper can't do color yet... so you'd need an e-book reader that had a normal screen instead of one that uses e-paper like the Kindle.

I got to see and hold a Kindle during class last week since my professor brought one in to show us. It DEFINITELY reminded me of a PADD!

I'd say the iPhone is more like a PADD. And, with the boom in homemade aps being added every day, it's only going to be more so.

I just got a Kindle 2. The entire unit is about the size of a mass trade paperback (but not as thick.) It is very light.

The reading screen is, uh, 3 1/2 inches wide and just shy of 5 inches tall. Surprisingly, it's very easy to read. One can adjust the font size, and in a car, the book can read itself aloud. That's great when one is driving on a long trip, or if a passenger in the car at night when it's too dark to read. Which reminds me, I must pick up some earphones for it.

I'm finding that I like this BETTER than reading a physical book. That's astonishing. But it's lightweight and not at all awkward and can even be easily read one-handed, as when one is having lunch and reading at the same time.

The only thing that would improve it would be having it in color.

I've seen a picture of the Kindle 3 online, and to be honest, while it looks great for reading (it's bigger,) it really looks too big to tote it out with me, so no regrets over having a Kindle 2 and not waiting.

I've read newspapers on the Kindle and have no problem with it. However, the paper isn't exactly like a newspaper when it comes to presentation, and they don't do comics, obits, want ads, at least in the two papers I've had a chance to read.

Well the iPhone is alot smaller than a PADD...

That is, in fact, my only issue with using an iPhone as an e-reader. I want something at least the size of a paperback.

So wait for Kindle 3? :)

I am playing around with a colour e-book reader at the moment, it's not quite ready for market but it's amazing - I've been reading comics on it and the experience beats paper hands down.

The iPhone/iPod Touch make terrible book readers. Keeping the screen on that long while you rread really does drain the battery. You'll get about 3 hours in which to read and then it'll need a charge.

Something like the Sony Reader will give you a lot longer battery life in which to read.

Can you give us any details, like where to preorder?

Changing the screens really isn't an option yet, but there are some sites that will do custom graphics for you to apply vinyl skins to the outside of your kindle.. so you may want to look around for those.

I don't have a link right now (I'm at work), but I originally found the pages while reading the comments sections at the bottom of the Kindle web page. You could probably come up with something through google quicker though.. there are several companies out there that make custom skins to apply to your Kindle (and other hand held devices, cell phones, etc.)

Sadly it's supplied by the non-disclosure agreement corporation. ;)

Joe, if said NDA corporation is looking for any other testers, feel free to send them my info :D

Granted while it isn't anything near as cool as a Kindle. There is an app for the psp that allows one to use it as an Ebook Reader. I've got several ebooks on it, and for such a small screen size its perfectly read-able without my glasses.

Still no color. Though you can underclock it and make the battery last forever.

And for those comic fans (Myself included) out there, there is also another app called PSP Comic. Makes this thing so much more functional!

The new Kindle has showed up for pre-order on Amazon today. Figures, right, after I just bought the Kindle 2.

While it might make reading a newspaper easier than on the Kindle 2, it's just too big (to me) to take out of the house and part of why I bought the Kindle was for travel.

Plus it's $130 more. Almost $500 for the new one. Ouch.

I put some comics up on the KINDLE for a test. The B/W is daunting but not an automatic dealbreaker.
