Spoilers Killjoys Season 2

I think this last episode was the strongest this season by far. I had not been impressed with S2.

So it looks like we might actually be leaving the Quad for at least part of next week's episode.

Maybe not next week. They might be setting up something for a few weeks later. Travel between the worlds of the Quad is a quick commute, but interstellar travel seems like it might be a significantly longer haul.

Is Seyah some kind of title for members of the Nine? I think I remember them also calling Pawter Seyah Simms last season after they revealed she was one of the Nine.

Yes, apparently. Pawter's mother was also addressed as Seyah Simms. Apparently it's an honorific that's always appended after the first name (Delle Seyah) or before the last name (Seyah Kendry).

Damn my spell check really hates all of the names in this show.
The names on this show can be a bit much.

Good season so far, and I'll agree that Aaron Ashmore is the heart of the show. (And for that reason, I'm worried about Pawter's fate.)

Also, how 'bout that space station last night? From pipes on a ship to a nice wide hallway from some mall or office building, all to represent a space station that had a classroom that apparently only housed a small handful of children in cryopods. What the heck was the other 99.9% of the space on that space station used for?

The cryopod learning was a new, experimental technique. Presumably the previous students actually lived and studied there like at a normal boarding school. And since this was a station built by and for the Qreshi elite, of course it was bigger and more luxurious than it needed to be.

I'm sorry, the "Life Support Off Line" trope really dragged the episode down for me, pulled me right out of the story. 7 or so people running around in a space station the size of a shopping mall and they're suddenly running out of oxygen? WTF!?! Given the volume of atmosphere it would be days, if not weeks before O2 levels dropped to levels of concern. In reality, it would be the build-up of CO and CO2 levels that would be problematic long before reduced O2 levels would be of concern.

I wish writers would just avoid that trope all together...

Q2

This week's episode was really well-written. This has become a really good show. It was always a good show, but it's gotten even better. And the plot is sure advancing fast. Pawter becomes head of her family (after suffering some serious losses), Johnny's relationships with both Pawter and Dutch begin to change, and we learn a significant amount about both Khlyen's pursuit and the Jaqobis family history.

One thing I noticed: We can now probably rule out the fan theory that Killjoys and Dark Matter are in the same universe. Dutch said that faster-than-light communication is impossible with known technology, but on DM they use FTL comms all the time. Although I suppose it's conceivable that the technology was lost at some point in some collapse of civilizations. (And it can't be that KJ comes first, because it's clearly much farther in the future, given the extragalactic setting and the distinct traditions and culture.)

Pawter's family consists of only two now. The episode was ok, but all the SyFy promos for Sharknado and the spider show were awful.

...but all the SyFy promos for Sharknado and the spider show were awful.

I'm pretty sure those movies are dumb on purpose -- horror parodies meant for people who like laughing at bad movies. And they're a way for Syfy to pay the bills for the classier stuff -- something they used to rely on wrestling shows for, so I consider this an improvement.

Yeah, there is so much emphasis on the goofy cheesiness with things like Sharknado and Lavalantula that I'm pretty sure they have to be doing it on purpose.
I really liked this episode. It was cool getting learn more about the Jacobis and Simms families.
It looks like Johnny and D'Avin's father hasn't done that great since they left.
I was pretty surprised Pawter actually became the head of her family, I didn't expect that. I'm really glad her and Johnny appear to be becoming a real couple, I like them together.
The Dav and Khylen body switch was a lot of fun.

I'm happy to see that the green goo doesn't turn you into a complete mindless drone. Perhaps there's hope Fancy can break free of Khylen at some point.

Errr, how did Dad walk from the house to the power station without a suit like Evil fiancee and Johnny, and not get frozen by the fog?

I'm surprised too, since I liked seeing Pawter as part of the team, and this new role should keep her at more of a distance. But it does afford us more access into the Nine as that part of the storyline advances, and it should be good to have someone on the Nine to serve as a counterpoint to Delle Seyah.

The Dav and Khylen body switch was a lot of fun.

Rob Stewart and Luke Macfarlane did do a surprisingly good job playing each other's characters. That was well-done. (And I like it that Dutch recognized Khlyen from his fighting style.)

He did get frozen by the fog. That was the whole point. It took several minutes for the freezing to take effect, as we'd seen with the servant and Pawter's mother and sister. It wasn't instantaneous. So he had enough time to get through the fog and help Johnny, but he sacrificed his life by doing so. He was doomed anyway, which is why he volunteered to stay and detonate the bomb.

They both seem about equal on surgical staple technology.

The only minor disappointment for me was that we finally got outside The Quad, but all we saw was Dav and Johnny's father's living room.

well yeah, those shows are meant to be no better than they are. I just get tired of seeing the promos at nearly every break. When I watch 2 shows back to back, my eyes cross from 2 hrs of sharks and spiders. SyFy isn't the only channel to do this. I might just be out of the habit of seeing commercials so much.

It's Shark Week on Syfy ending with the annual new Sharknado so I suspect this week is worse than normal. From what I've seen in general Syfy has been getting better about showing legit films of late.

I've been spoiled with the 30-second skip with DVR which alleviates much frustration with commercials.

Who's going to use the Defiance sets first -- Killjoys or Dark Matter?

I think they'd probably fit Killjoys better. I could see them as a neighborhood in Old Town or a similar city on Westerly.

Sometimes it seems so weird to me that both these universes have interstellar travel, AIs, and other major advances, but still use some tech that's no more advanced than the 21st century, like the guns, ground vehicles, and medical equipment. Dark Matter even has very, very present-day computer monitors and keyboards in the crew quarters.

Of course, in decades past, we had science fiction depicting civilizations that had FTL travel, teleportation, etc., yet still used vacuum tubes and computer punch cards -- not to mention the traditional gender roles and the near-complete absence of nonwhite people.

Agreed. Was that "half way across the galaxy" an exagerration or can they really travel that far in that amount of time? This show could use a bit more world-building. Anyway great episode.
