KG on Pond's departure

How did a thread about Karen Gillian touching on her character's departure turn into a Rose bashing thread? Anyway I am a big Rose and Amy fan and I don't get fans who say Rose didn't evolve. She went being from being a bored teen working at a department store to dimension hopping heroine who helped on several occasions to save the world. It's fine if you don't like Rose. Don't tell me she didn't evolve though.

Well to be fair, things were different back then. It was generally considered a second-tier kids show, repeats were rare, and the program was made for a different audience. Chidren rather than us old internet geeks. :)

As for Rose, she was fine first season. Its when they decided to make her and Ten into a couple that she started to grate a bit.

With Amy it seems like the program had just turned into "Vacation trip gone wrong", and "What can we do to fuck with Amy and Rory this week?"

In your opinion not everybody shares that opinion as people quickly became tired of Rose.

Disliking one particular character is not the same thing as that character being less fleshed-out than earlier characters or the same thing as characters in general being less valued by most audience members.

If the character is so valued by the audience why dislike said character at all?

...?

Because audiences are never going to have the same opinion. There will always be a few people who don't like popular characters. That doesn't mean that character is not popular, and that doesn't mean that the general patterns of what the audience values doesn't persist.

I'm fairly certain the show still isn't made for us old Internet geeks. ;)

Getting back on topic...

I hope Moffat doesn't kill off Amy for good when Karen Gillian leaves (same for Rory) because I want Amy and Rory to live happily ever after (and not just because the past two seasons have been intended as a fairy tale). The thread about Amy and Rory having children again after River made me think about how much those two deserve happiness and long life after their experiences with The Doctor and in particular regard to what happened with River. I'll be really disappointed if Amy ends up dying per Karen's wishes.

Because audiences and writers care about these characters more than they did during the days of DW TOS.

That's not true we had longer running compations on the old series and Sarah Jane Smith really never went away.

And yet the characters on DW TOS are much more two-dimensional, and were most often never spoken of or mentioned again upon leaving the show.

Let's face it: DW TOS was made in an era when characterization was much shallower, and where characters were much less valued, than today.

None of which means that characters should come back ad infinitum. Rose's story was over. She met a man who changed her whole world and the only way she'd leave his side was down to either death or some other act of separation, RTD gave us the latter, an emotional semi-tragic story that still left Rose in a better place than when her story began. It got annoying before the end but it was still a well told tale with a beginning a middle and an end...except that wasn't good enough for Russell.

And what's this bullshit about characters never being mentioned again in classic Who once they've left? The classic series was more self referential than you think.

As for Amy I hope they don’t kill her off. I adore KG but I also hope they don’t bring her back in the future either. Who knows what’s in Moffat’s mind though.

the only time Amy should return is for the 60th anniversary, as part of the Six Doctors, with Eight, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen and Fourteen.

she gets left at home with Rory junior, whilst Rory senior goes off with Eleven to save the universe.

If she doesn't want her character to reappear, couldn't she just not agree to appear on the show again?

She was on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show at the weekend. That's maybe where these quotations came from. From the little bit I heard she was in jokey mode so I don't think you could take anything she said seriously.

It'd be nice if she were able to trust the discretion of the writers. I think the end of "End of Time" with Rose would've been a lot more affecting if we hadn't seen her in season 4.

True. But for whatever reason, RTD was seemingly obsessed with that teenage girl. Which is creepy, and weird since he doesn't even swing that way. I never did understand his fascination with her.

I wouldn't say it was creepy. I just disagreed with his continuing use of the character. And, I didn't share his fondness for the character. But, that doesn't make it creepy.

Can you just imagine other children they'd have? Always comparing them with lil Melody. And how do you explain that your big sister is older than your mother? Oh some messed up family moments there!

You do not get to invoke the word Six in a multi-Doctor story without including the Sixth Doctor! Sacrilege!

And then be lambasted on the Internet (and maybe in the press) for being too stuck-up to be on the show again? :p

They'll just put the new actress in a wig and shoot her from behind before doing a regeneration. They've done it before, they'll do it again!
