Kevin Smith-Stop complaining and start creating again!

That guy sounds like he has just as much of an axe to grind has Smith does.

I mean, I haven't seen Cop Out, but I laughed enough at the trailers to know it's not as bad as that guy is claiming it is. He sounds one of those cliche, jealous of a real filmmaker stereotypes.

Smith needs to get over himself a little. So does this guy.

Maybe one of them is gay?

Howell is just one of these snobby uber-critics who lives for independent and foreign film, and who can't get out of the '70's (the era when the movies that they loved were king.) But weight issues and the Northwest Airlines incident aside, he's got a little bit of a point.

He has a bit of a point, yes, but after that description you just gave, I can only think one thing. He once saw Smith as the saviour of the indie scene, which he admits in the article, and now feels like Smith is selling out to try and be a more mainstream filmmaker, which Smith has said he'd like to do. So this reviewer feels "betrayed" by Smith's rejection of everything the critic holds dear, so he's lashing out, and possibly giving Smith overly negative reviews in the process. He has a bit of a point, but at the same time, he's also reinforcing Smith's.

Smith didn't write Cop Out and I find comedies are more reliant on writing than good directing. I do think that too often either writing doesn't get enough praise compared to the director or the director gets more blame for a bad written movie...vice versa.

I would like a Clerks 3 though Smith :techman:

Sounds about right to me.

Smith has always spoken his mind. This isn't anything new. In his mind, he is creating. He's perfectly content with how Cop Out turned out, and I think he's defended his movies pretty slavishly since I can remember (except for maybe Mallrats or Jersey Girl, which wasn't all that bad).

Plus, he's doing his horror film Red Slate next, and despite its mediocrity, Cop Out was a big deviation for Smith. So as long as you can tolerate his yammering... and if you can't, don't listen to him... he's just doing what he's always been doing.

It's actually "Red State" not "Red Slate" Jackson...and I've been looking forward to this since Kevin started talking about the premise for the film. I think he should have started working on this after "Zack and Miri" and not bothered with "Cop Out".

Zack and Miri Make A Porno was more foul-mouthed than funny, and doused my hopes that Smith could make a real comeback. I didn't bother to see Cop Out.

I actually thought Zack & Miri was quite good, and even showed some directorial growth. It was completely unfairly maligned and deserved to do better than it did.

Zack & Miri was quite good but not as good as Clerks II which IMO is Kevin's best movie. I can't wait for Red State. Be nice to see what he does with the Retard Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Morons.

2/3 of Zack and Miri was actually great. Jersey Girl is pretty good too. Having said that, I have no interest in seeing Cop Out at the cinema. I don't know why Smith would choose to direct someone else's material - I always thought it'd be the other way round.

Forgeticus!

Ron taking a face full of Harry. Ah, SModcast.

It's funny though, Michael Moore said the exact same thing to a Toronto Star critic about Canadian Bacon. Critics are just too high brow to understand comedies.

Anyway, whatever. As long as he does SModcast, I'm happy. The last hundred hours of podcasts have been more entertaining than his entire movie career... and unlike Gervais, he doesn't charge for it.

You know, I'm okay with him having Walt and Bryan and Malcolm on his show. Malcolm's pure hatred of random people is awesome and it's funny when Kevin calls him on it.

Actually, Malcolm's okay. Brian and Walt descends too much into "hey, remember that time we were kids...!"
