He has a bit of a point, yes, but after that description you just gave, I can only think one thing. He once saw Smith as the saviour of the indie scene, which he admits in the article, and now feels like Smith is selling out to try and be a more mainstream filmmaker, which Smith has said he'd like to do. So this reviewer feels "betrayed" by Smith's rejection of everything the critic holds dear, so he's lashing out, and possibly giving Smith overly negative reviews in the process. He has a bit of a point, but at the same time, he's also reinforcing Smith's.
It's actually "Red State" not "Red Slate" Jackson....
