I'm going to see "An Evening With Kevin Smith" tonight, so perhaps he'll talk about the movie a little bit. I'll let you guys know!![]()
guy has some serious closet issues as each DVD becomes more and more progressively about oral sex - with him both receiving AND giving. I am gay and even *I* felt uncomfortable with his fixation.
I've been excited for Kevin Smith's upcoming horror film "Red State". Not only because it will be Kev's first attempt at a horror movie but because of the interesting subject matter that he's planning to tackle. The first time I had read or heard anything about the movie was back just before he did "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" (which I have felt was one of his best well rounded films overall) where he hoped to do "Red State" next but ended up surprising everyone and directing "Cop Out" which ultimately enabled him to get the capital needed for "Red State". Here is the teaser poster and the log line for the film.

"Red State" is about a group of misfits who encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in middle America, and stars:
Michael Parks, John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Michael Anagarano, Kyle Gallner (Bart Allen from Smallville), Steven Root, and Kevin Pollak.
Wow. Mocking and/or demonizing fundamentalist, middle-American Christians. How brave and edgy of him.
(For the record, I'm Catholic and found "Dogma" entertaining back in the day. But it was sort of original back then. How many of these "Christians suck!" movies really need to be made?)
About time that they were, and about time that somebody mad a movie like Red Dawn, but about the REAL Red Dawn coming from the Red States in the United States of America and not from overseas or from China. That is what the current version of Red Dawn should have been about.
As for 'How many of these "Christians suck!" movies really need to be made'-maybe hundreds of them do until Christians get the message that this is the motherfracking 21st century, not the 20's, 30's, 40's, or 50's, and that the culture and civilization need to get beyond rigid Judeo-Christian dogma about sexuality and everything else in the world. That's a message that truly needs to be heard.
If anyone bothered to read about this film before making snap judgments, this isnt a blanket "christians suck" film, its a take on Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church...

But if that's the case, the title is misleading. "Red State" generally refers to a republican leaning state. As the Southern Poverty Law Center notes, Phelps ideology is not really liberal or conservative, just extremist, anti-gay and anti-American.
By that logic, "Philadelphia" is a misleading title because it has little to do with the plot of the film, it's just set there.
Same thing with Red State, the plot synopsis says:
"A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America."
Middle America, which is nearly exclusively made up of Red States. I don't see what the problem is.

But, as you point out, not all states in the midwest are "red states."
Also, it should probably be noted that the film you reference was titled "Philadelphia" in part to conjure up images of "the city of brotherly love" (ie, compassion).
Melissa Leo from Homicide? Yay!
While I've only seen her in a few things since Homicide ended, her IMDB entry certainly doesn't suggest she had "vanished from the face of the Earth." It looks to me like she's been steadily working.Agreed. For awhile it seemed like she had vanished from the face of the Earth after Homicide ended. Her character was a favorite of mine in that series.Melissa Leo from Homicide? Yay!
