Kevin Smith Reveals "Red State" Poster!

I'm going to see "An Evening With Kevin Smith" tonight, so perhaps he'll talk about the movie a little bit. I'll let you guys know! :)

At this point, I'd almost rather see Kevin Smith look into a full time stand-up career instead of trying to be a director.

I've seen the other three DVDs - guy has some serious closet issues as each DVD becomes more and more progressively about oral sex - with him both receiving AND giving. I am gay and even *I* felt uncomfortable with his fixation.

Let us know if this is still his thing when you see him.

Yeah, that's one of the weird things about the dude. I think he's on record as saying he has a gay brother and that makes him sensitive to gay issues but....that doesn't explain his obsession with gay sex.

Given the theories that homosexuality is genetic, and that brothers obviously share certain genetic traits, you almost have to wonder if Kevin isn't just a little deeper in the closet than his sibling.

I wouldn't care either way - it's just I'd feel jipped if I went to see somebody give a talk about filmmaking and so on and it became a long extended monlogue about his closet desire to suck Ben Affleck's knob!

I've been excited for Kevin Smith's upcoming horror film "Red State". Not only because it will be Kev's first attempt at a horror movie but because of the interesting subject matter that he's planning to tackle. The first time I had read or heard anything about the movie was back just before he did "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" (which I have felt was one of his best well rounded films overall) where he hoped to do "Red State" next but ended up surprising everyone and directing "Cop Out" which ultimately enabled him to get the capital needed for "Red State". Here is the teaser poster and the log line for the film.

"Red State" is about a group of misfits who encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in middle America, and stars:

Michael Parks, John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Michael Anagarano, Kyle Gallner (Bart Allen from Smallville), Steven Root, and Kevin Pollak.

Good to see this movie being made.

Wow. Mocking and/or demonizing fundamentalist, middle-American Christians. How brave and edgy of him.

(For the record, I'm Catholic and found "Dogma" entertaining back in the day. But it was sort of original back then. How many of these "Christians suck!" movies really need to be made? :vulcan:)

About time that they were, and about time that somebody mad a movie like Red Dawn, but about the REAL Red Dawn coming from the Red States in the United States of America and not from overseas or from China. That is what the current version of Red Dawn should have been about.

As for 'How many of these "Christians suck!" movies really need to be made'-maybe hundreds of them do until Christians get the message that this is the motherfracking 21st century, not the 20's, 30's, 40's, or 50's, and that the culture and civilization need to get beyond rigid Judeo-Christian dogma about sexuality and everything else in the world. That's a message that truly needs to be heard.

Really, that's the only appropriate reaction.

:guffaw:

If anyone bothered to read about this film before making snap judgments, this isnt a blanket "christians suck" film, its a take on Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church's extreme fundamentalism which as far as I know isnt actively endorsed by any main form of Christianity.

Also, as far as I know no one has done a film abouta subject like this, and I think its a particularly inspired idea for a horror. There's no monster who can rip you limb from limb, just one man who's so possessed of his perverted ideas he is compelled to stop you simply because your different from him.

Oh, and im an atheist. What has that got to do with anything?

But if that's the case, the title is misleading. "Red State" generally refers to a republican leaning state. As the Southern Poverty Law Center notes, Phelps ideology is not really liberal or conservative, just extremist, anti-gay and anti-American.

But the same could be said for every major religion. Maybe we should put a hold on the "Christians suck" movies until we get a few more "Jews suck," and "Muslims suck" films in the can.

I would venture that "Red State" is a play on the very thing that you were describing in your previous post G-Man. Maybe I was completely wrong when I said this wasn't being made for controversial reasons. It seems like it already has garnered controversy here.

:wtf:

By that logic, "Philadelphia" is a misleading title because it has little to do with the plot of the film, it's just set there.

Same thing with Red State, the plot synopsis says:

"A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America."

Middle America, which is nearly exclusively made up of Red States. I don't see what the problem is.

But, as you point out, not all states in the midwest are "red states."

Also, it should probably be noted that the film you reference was titled "Philadelphia" in part to conjure up images of "the city of brotherly love" (ie, compassion).

Again the title is supposed to evoke a horror mentality combined with a play on the subject it's tackling. Not a big deal.

Yes, not all states, but it shouldn't be difficult to realize this film will take place in one. It's narrative shorthand for telling you where this is set. The term "Red State" evokes right wing conservatives who preach the word of god and are vehemently anti-anything they don't happen to believe in which happens to be a theme the film deals with head on, and in doing so tells the viewer everything they need to know about the film before viewing it.

It's the exact opposite of misleading, its telling you flat out what themes this movie will be dealing with, namely conservative christian beliefs ran amok.

Melissa Leo from Homicide? Yay!
Agreed. For awhile it seemed like she had vanished from the face of the Earth after Homicide ended. Her character was a favorite of mine in that series.
While I've only seen her in a few things since Homicide ended, her IMDB entry certainly doesn't suggest she had "vanished from the face of the Earth." It looks to me like she's been steadily working.
