KENOBI: The Life. The Legend...The Movie?

So we've heard that there will likely be a Kenobi film, and out of all the possible spin off films, this is the one I find the most intriguing.

This is in large part because of what might be my favorite Star Wars book, Kenobi by John Jackson Miller.

For those who haven't read it, the book was published in late 2013. It is the story of Obi-Wan in the weeks following Episode 3. The tone is quite different from most SW books that I've read. If you are a fan of westerns, particularly the film Shane starring Alan Ladd, or the film Yojimbo you'll no doubt find many familiar elements.

Obi-Wan has to learn how to no longer be Obi-Wan. He thinks living out in the desert is a good way to hide, and be forgotten. It's quite the opposite of course. In this rural area of tattoine, everyone knows everyone, and his presence draws their curiosity.

There are not many books written about Obi-Wan and this period. Another good one is The Life & Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi by Ryder Wyndam. It's a young adult novel written from Luke's perspective as he reads Ben's diaries.

What are your thoughts on the book, Obi-Wan's story, and the possible movie?

(I'll post some related interviews and excerpts as soon as I have more time)

A few issues of the currently on going Marvel 'Star Wars' comic covered some of what Obi-Wan was up to.

I think it's very definitely going to happen at some point in the near-ish future. I hope it does. While I'd like to see Lucasfilm expand the universe on film at some point, of all the various OT-related movies I can imagine them making, one about Kenobi's exile on Tatooine is pretty much at the top of my list.

I wish JJM's Kenobi had been written just a little later so it could have made the cut into canon instead of ending up part of Legends.

Ehn. Count me out on the Kenobi standalone film. I found the "Obi Wan: Private Eye" segments of the PT to be the most boring parts of those films. I also think that, compared to the other characters who might merit such a vehicle, he's the one with the least interesting backstory.

My opinion, of course. I'm aware he has a huge fan following. But is a huge FAN following (not a huge following) enough to warrant such a financial gamble?

I definitely hope a Kenobi movie happens. We need more of the only really good character/actor from the prequels, and he certainly deserves a movie more then Young Han Solo. Since McGregor seems to want to come back, it makes total sense to do an anthology movie with him.

You're right I forgot all about those. I "watched" them on Youtube as a motion comic. I thought they were really good too. Owen is just as much of a jerk in the book.

Fortunately, very little if any of it is actually in direct conflict with canon, so I don't mind making it part of my head-canon.

Same here. It also helps that it covers such a brief span of time (a few months to a year at most) that it doesn't overlap with any canon material. I did however note there's an interlude with Kenobi in the 'Ahsoka' novel that took place around the same time. Seemed like it might have been a bit of a nod.

A stand-alone Kenobi movie was the first wish I sent in prayer to The Great Mouse when He liberated Star Wars.

Here's some of the extras:

An (extended) interview with John Jackson Miller on Roqoo Depot. There were many other interviews on Youtube, but this one I thought provided the best insight from the author.

There is also a part 2, which contains spoilers.

The Audiobook for Kenobi(The Book) is actually up on youtube right now, but I would always recommend reading the actual book over the audiobook, if one has the time. Star Wars audiobooks are usually top quality and have very good voice actors, but some of the advantages of reading a book in the first place are lost.

And here's the link for Audible:

There's a sample available.

Well, if nothing else, Lucasfilm knows there is an audience for it and a great willingness to see McGregor back in the roll.

Realizing that I sounded very negative....
I really do hope we get a Kenobi movie. And I hope even more Ewan will be back. THAT's the Star Wars Anthology I want. To be able to watch that movie before Episode IX...... Star Wars can be over after that, and I'll be happy.
