Kelvin Timeline all but confirmed

I hate to bring up politics here Are you blind to what is happening in the U.S. post Donald Trump's election? I ask because if anything, it shows HOW MUCH (and how many people) still harbor VERY prejudiced attitudes, and BOTH sides can an will resort to violence. We have a U.S. Administration that wants a return to the attitudes and values from a much earlier time in the 20th century; and while not a majority, it's a very sizable ;portion of the U.S. population.

Europe to in many countries also have large segments of the population (and leadership) that feel similarly as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think that socially, we've really made a lot of the gains you suggest; or that in general most of the the world's population believes such change is wanted/good. I wish it were different, I REALLY do - but I don't really think mankind will change all that much. We've been this way since formal Civilization began. There have been times of small pockets of progressive tolerance (even in ancient times); but overall they don't last.
Unfortunately, even in Trek's fictional history, humanity had to go through some pretty devastating stuff.

I think humanity can change, but that the state of things may not improve as quickly as would be preferred.

We haven't though. Medieval Europe was an incredibly violent place, filled with all sorts of horrible attitudes and beliefs which we have long since evolved past. Social evolution is absolutely a real thing, driven by religion, technology, philosophy, politics, science, the labour market, and the lessons of history. It isn't purely linear, definitely, we fall off the wagon a lot, but there's a general trend there. The anti war movement that was mentioned is a great example. We've gone in a century from handing out feathers of cowardice to concientious objectors to rallies of millions against wars, and an international court for the new concept of 'crimes against humanity'.

It's also a bit ridiculous to reject any argument from percentages because the world population has gone up, when that very population rise is part of what we're taking about. Infant mortality, life expectancy, availability of fertiliser, rule of law, more stable governments and social structures and less constant fighting all contributed to a world that could sustain more humans. There's no way the current population could have existed in the past.

There's no way the current population could have existed in the past.

The point is that under the most stable of conditions, with a growing world economy, it can barely exist now. Which is why when things start to fall apart the collapse is likely to accelerate rapidly.

We've completely overrun our natural habitat and are barely holding it together. Our civilization is a Ponzi scheme.

^ True dat...

srsly, trying to drag this bloated whale of a thread back onto the shore of a topic (WARNING: Do not try these metaphors at home), I wonder what's the absolutely quickest way for DSC to state once and for all that it is NOT in the Kelvinverse.

A reference to Kirk on the Farragut, perhaps?

The Kelvin in earth orbit out a window in a scene. Someone saying no one has heard from the Romulans in years in the foreground.

A Robau appearance.

Faran Tahir is up for it - I asked him on Twitter if he'd play Robau on DSC, and he said he'd love to do it.

I'm liking the idea of Robau being President of the Federation in 2254...

I don't see them not using the Romulans. I know Enterprise had no members of the crew ever see a Romulan, but there's only so long they could keep that up as it was a ridiculous idea back in Balance of Terror that they somehow never saw a Romulan before that moment.

I doubt the Romulans will turn up on DSC. There's really no reason for them to. I mean, in "Balance of Terror" the Federation hadn't had any contact with them for a long time, IIRC.

As for the offending line: It's not that much of a stretch. Assuming 1) the Romulans refused to allow visual communication during the war, and 2) they got other races like the Remans to be their cannon fodder during ground engagements, it's not surprising that no one had ever seen a Romulan up close.

The Romulans have been in every series so far. I see no reason they'd be excluded from DSC.

I don't find it believable that not one body would ever be recovered from a wrecked ship. And if they used Remans as soldiers then Starfleet would think that's what the Romulans look like.

These are the kind of problems that would be so easy to avoid by just saying it's Kelvin-timeline, or saying it's a complete reboot.

JJverse destroyed Vulcan in 2258. Why would anyone on Discovery know George Kirk, he would be one officer among millions in Starfleet.
