Kelvin Timeline all but confirmed

Here's your source. The same guy who was insisting a new Trek series was secretly in production and would debut Jan 1, 2015. He now thinks Bad Robot are secretly pulling the strings behind Star Trek Discovery.

That's where my order of tinfoil hats went.

Thanks. Yeah, I saw the latest uber depressing midnight's edge video last night. If anyone is really excited and optimistic about DSC, stay away.

Was this the one from a week or two ago talking about multiverse Sareks?

Well Meyer is now talking about how Discovery is part of the continuity, but in a niche that allows for another stream. That has a Kelvin-timeline sound to it, or that it is completely separate from the events of TOS. Except that the presence of Sarek and Mudd would seem to make that unlikely.

There are likely Sarek's and Mudd's in multiple timelines. Meyer's comments do make it sound like they are finessing how "Prime" the show is actually going to be.

Well obviously there was Ben Cross Sarek and there was a "Mudd Incident" before STID which the comics fleshed out. My point was more that the presence of these two characters makes it seem less likely that DSC is going to take place so far from where TOS happens that there won't really be any overlap.
The question I have, is at what point have enough changes happened that you can no longer say it's Prime? Imagine, for example, if they do an episode where Sarek is killed by Klingons. Do we try to come with a convoluted explanation for how to undo it? Or just place it in a new continuity?

Carol Marcus keeps protomatter on hand. She'll just spray a little on Sarek's corpse.

See. Still believably in the Prime universe! ;)

Me either. A niche of the continuity doesn't mean a niche that will veer far away from it - it means a bit of the overall structure that hasn't been explored. And considering how unexplored the 23rd century actually was, that's a lot of niche to work with!

What we really need is the entire pilot episode devoted to explaining exactly which universe this is, how it relates to both of the existing timelines, and which offers a reasonable and detailed explanation for the prop, set design, costume, makeup and special effect inconsistencies in relation to a show made 50 years ago.

That will surely draw new viewers in and make Discovery an instant hit. :techman:

Pilot? We need an entire season!!!!!!!!!!
;)

What if Discovery lasts seven seasons, and nothing ever happens in the series that would definitively place it in either universe? Then this argument will probably last forever.

You could have an eventual reboot of TOS, if Discovery is successful. Complete with Captain Burnham just finishing a tour as Captain of the Enterprise and handing it off to Kirk.

You would still have people going, "well the producers say it is the Prime timeline!!!"

I'm more concerned with whether "Moroccan Roll" is in the same Prime continuity as "The Patagonia Special."

When the Kelvin universe is held up as the standard that is being wished for, when 8 years ago, Abrams was the worst thing on Earth, it is highly amusing to me.
Hell, people forget the backlash TNG got when it launched; or the cries of "DS9 is too dark...it's p*ssing all over GR's 'vision'.."

Cries of "NOT TREK" are par for the course when ANY new Star Trek project is announced and put into actual production.
