Kelvin Timeline all but confirmed

It doesn't matter what timeline it takes place in, because it's not really taking place. Somebody made it up. Just like the last one, just like the next one.

So go ahead and pretend it's in whatever timeline you want. It doesn't matter anyway. :techman:

I like to pretend it's set next Thursday, just outside of a Toledo nightclub.

The uniforms don’t fit Prime timeline, neither does the technology, the warp effect, The HUD on the view screen, the lens flares, the nacelles on the Shinzou, hell, the Klingons don’t fit the Prime timeline.

The beaming effect looks like TUC, with those lines coming down though.

It's all good though. It looks great, I like this trailer....its exciting.

Star Trek has had a temporal cold war, a temporal hot war, Borg and Romulans coming back to wreak havok and a madman with a delete ray annihilating entire worlds in the Delta Quadrant with galactic repercussions.

Oh yeah, not to mention a war between members of a species that can reshape infinity with the flick of a finger.

I think the days of making sense of the Trek timeline died long ago, it just took us until now to realize it.

That's why holding tight to canon doesn't matter. Perhaps during the original run, and then TNG, holding on to canon was more important, but after all these decades, with all of the changes, the retcons, and such, it's just a hot mess. No wonder CBS said "fuck it, let's go back to just before Kirk."

According to some people in this thread (who are taking criticism of the trailer way too seriously) it does matter, because that's what the producers declared, lol.

Why do people care so much which timeline it's in? If the story is written with even an ounce of credibility, it will never matter.

As for the style: Of course a good chunk of it is Kelvin-derivative. Where people really expecting otherwise?
Also, we've always got head canon. In the end, people don't care much for Word of God if their head canon suits them better or simply makes more sense. I don't care which timeline it's in, but my brain keeps telling me that there's no way that aesthetic will morph into the TOS 60s look in a decade.

It doesn't really matter, though, as long as the stories are good. Like the Klingons, I don't give a damn what they look like as long as they don't annoy me like the TNG-era ones did.

I hope it will not morph into TOS aesthetic in 10 years. If we will see the Enterprise I want to see some updates to it. Not as radical as the JJ Verse, but still an update. Maybe something in line with that proof of concept that was presented as updated interior visuals. Just keep the Enterprise Uniforms similar to the original ones.

Well, it's obvious we've reached a point in society where we've been slapped down by so many reboots/remakes etc, that in-universe continuity in a franchise is no longer something that's important. And if you still actually care about such things, you're some kind of freak.

I'm out. Have a good one, folks.

Well the warp effect has been changed many times throughout Star Trek. From The Cage where they overlayed stars on the bridge shots all the way to the Beyond distortion effect. This one to me looks like a hybrid of the TNG streaky stars and the ST09 space tunnel.

How dare you criticize the trailer! Be gone with you, fiend!

But for real, I feel ya man. Some people in this thread try their best to make those who are criticizing the trailer look like idiots.

Truest thing said here.

I don't think Klingons are half as iconic as Trek fans think they are. Vulcans legitimately are a well known look, thanks to Spock. Klingons are a well known name, but their makeup specifics? Not so much.
I would agree that might have been the case if we never got Worf. I think he like Nimoy and the ears are what made that look so popular.

I've noticed. And I'm only criticizing one aspect of the damn thing. I liked the rest just fine. I'm just sick of changes being made to things just for the sake of making changes.

Nonsense, lots of people have criticised many aspects of it without being 'made to look like idiots'. Including the look of the Klingons. But that doesn't mean that people won't ask questions of those who are happy that Ming the merciless in boot polish turned into forehead ridges and biker hair (on the same character no less) but this version of the Klingons is sacrilege.

So people with a different opinion than yours are somehow victims of social decline?

That's twisting things around on multiple fronts.

But since you're gone, I guess there isn't much point in breaking that down.

Nobody is making anyone look like an idiot. If something bothers you, it bothers you. If it doesn't, it doesn't. I'll make the disparities fit in my head as long as I think the show is worth the effort. The story's good? That's what I care about the most. But everyone's got different priorities, and I can totally see how the look of stuff not adding up could bother folks.

Something I still find weird is how people who see this as prime universe might have that opinion just because Brian Fuller said so. Nobody thinks the show runners might be lying or maybe don't even care about things like Prime universe or Kelvin Universe?

Jason

I honestly don't care about timelines, technology not being right or changes in art direction. It's all pointless because the show is fiction and doesn't have to be historically accurate. Some people are acting like this is a movie where Thomas Jefferson writes the Declaration of Independence on a MacBook. Every series is a product of its time and should remain that way.
