Kelvin Timeline all but confirmed

I'm not quite sure why all this arguing over the Discovery timeline. you can't compare the look to TOS, TOS was made in the 60's with what was available at the time. Of course Discovery isn't going to look like that. If TOS were made with all the FX advances it would look different too. I'm still going to wait for news when the start date is and watch and see where things go from there.

I think it comes down to 2 things.

1 It's very close to "TOS" time which makes suspension of disbelief harder. If this had been set 20 to 25 years further in the past I think people would acept it more because then you would see the show more like it's evolved from the "Enterprise" time and "TOS" could still exist in it's kind of magical 60's landscape that is never really dealt with in regards to the other Prime universe shows.
2 The Klingon look seems to be a big depature from what had became the accepted look since "TMP." I think their look at became just as iconic as Vulcan ears so that is going to unsettle people.

As for the aliens being updated I agree we have seen changes before but I do think some are seen as untouchable, were at best you can only do a minor changes. It really does come down to just how popular the aliens are and how different the new look is. It's one thing to change the Trill who were in one episode of "TNG" and the Klingons whose look as stayed pretty similiar since 1980, has had 2 series regulars and a number of popular reacuring characters.
I do think canon issues are seen more of a issue of fans who fell in love with Trek because of the 24th century shows and those who are more TOS fans. Canon in the 24th century shows did become more of a big deal then I think it was for "TOS."

I don't think anyone thinks the show is set in the Kelvin Timeline. I think some say the show looks like it was more inspired from the Kelvin Universe movies than the other Prime Universe stories but that is different. The general feeling I get is some think it's a 3rd universe, where it will basically take things from both Kelvin and Prime and do something new.

As for canon I think it's only important to just how much it matters to how much you want the show to feel connected to the other shows. For example I think canon was very important to TNG,DS9,Voyager and Enterprise because I felt like Rick Berman wanted them to all feel like they had a connection to each other. That's why they had similiar tech,uniforms,character and alien crossover's and a a bunch of name droping in the episodes. In one ep Garak might mention Sarek and in another Janeway might talk about Picard.
I think everyone expects to see nods to the other shows but I don't expect anyone thinks it will be on the level of the Berman years. Which can be a good thing, because it lets them to do their own thing but it will hurt in the eye's of those who want it to feel like it belongs with the other shows.
That's why I think the canon issue might be a even bigger deal to fans who came to Trek because of TNG or the other Berman shows. TOS fans already saw their universe get rebooted,TWICE, with TNG and then the Kelvin movies. This is the first time for 24th century fans even if the show ironically being changed the most is TOS and not the 24th century shows.

It's not the Prime timeline. It just isn't NuTrek either. It is NuNuTrek. This is a reimagined Trek or 3rd timeline. That's the best way to see this. This way they can do all the "reimagining" they want and you don't have to sweat it.

I don't trust them. They are trying to sale the show to a audience so I think they would say almost anything to garner interest. Plus they know they can't do it in the Kelvin Universe because that is for the movies, and they proably felt it would confuse people to start talking about a new 3rd universe because only we nerds care about that stuff.

I think they know. What we don't know is if they are being honest in telling us what they know. When they say this stuff it's basically a sales pitch to make people want to watch the show. It worked in getting people excited for the show who see Prime as sort of like a code word to returning to the classic Trek people grew up with. At least I think that might be what they are thinking.

I think that is true with us hardcore fans but I wonder how those statements play with casual fans who might have enjoyed Trek in the past but have moved on from it, or only had a passing interest in it to begin with because maybe they like Picard or Kirk or who knows what.

They don't care. The only thing that may cross their mind is whether you have to have seen what went before to understand this show.

The general public don't care if Law and Order: SVU is set in the same universe as the original, they just want a good show.

From what I've seen (right now), I can't make Discovery/TOS fit together. Maybe that's a failing on my part? But, I doubt CBS cares how I rationalize/treat the differences as long as I'm subscribing to their service.
