keeping it...real

Yeah I know its a SCIFI movie, and there are some scenes that look 'way out there' in terms of reality. But having said that, I hope they make the dialog a bit more realistic. None of the stuffy shirt stuff we got from time to time on the shows and movies. Keep the technobabble to an almost zero usage. I tried to watch TNG last night with my wife, but once Geordi and Data start firing off those lines dunked in technosauce? she can't watch and it slows the story down...

So...JJ...KEEP IT REAL!!!

Rob

Hmm...so, get rid of transporters, warp speed, artificial gravity, ftl communication, time travel, and universal translators? :wtf:

Agreed. One of the things that worked really well on ENT was the lack of technobabble and more casual speech. These were people who talked like you and I do. On the other hand, I'm currently rewatching VOY and some of the dialogue is so stiff, laced with techno nonsense that truly gets in the way. The same was true of TNG, actually to a greater extent.

Judging by the clips we've seen Trek XI will feature even more casual speech, something I'm really enthusiastic about.

But, but... but... without technobabble how will we know how smart they are supposed to be? and how superior to 21st century cavemen??

but i simply must know what happens if you invert the phase inducers!

Ummm...no..just the stupid techno-laced explanations as how they work..thats what I mean....

Rob

That happens on ST fan forums, not in ST movies, does it not?

Exactly. They're supposedly future scientists and engineers. If all we hear is contemporary street talk, what's the point of it happening on some technological marvel ship of the future?

I'm all for cutting back on technobabble inserted for the sake of it...or as an 'easy out' to difficult binds. But let's face it, they are never going to be able to get rid of all of it. Because this is, after all, fake technology we are dealing with.

Just don't rely on page after page after page of the stuff to solve a problem that takes page after page of technobabble to explain, or you're not writing drama anymore. It's like stopping to explain or theorize on the inner workings of a microwave oven instead of just setting the time and pushing the button.

In the days of TOS, science worked in broad strokes!

Fuck that...next you'll ask that it be days of our lives in space.

we had that already. it was called Battlestar Galactica. :p

dithlium crystals and intermix ratios go back to the days of tos.
not as much techno babel as tng but it was there.

Nope...just stop with the idiotic technobabble that turns off regular people...Even the actors know it was silly; ask them..ALL of them..

Rob

Yes, but not the overuse of it that we got from the modern treks...and it isn't it strange how the more the technobabble spread, the more the ratings tanked and the DORK label went through the roof....

Rob

actually wasnt tng one of the highest rated ones ever..
really it made the breakthrough to the ordinary audience with season 3 and especially after best of both worlds.
and in some ways it was the heaviest on technobabble.

really over the years all the series after it had to deal with a vastly different tv and entertainment climate./

this technobabble issue is really a non argument for me since the modern Trek actors, RDM and even Berman have stated, as did Snodgrass, that it was getting over done. If you don't see this as a problem, technobabble, then we are seeing two different shows. And, more importantly, we are two different kinds of fan. And TREKs rating slide began in the mid fifth season of TNG....and it is those remaining seasons of TNG where it TECHNOBABBLE really got out of hand...

Oh well..

oh i agree even in some of the best tng episodes that it got out of hand.
i just dont think it affected the ratings that much at the time.
though over the years it may have helped make tng look more aged.
