Which is very odd, considering how practically every bit-player alien who was in the background of a crowd scene for 2 seconds has had a whole personal and species history developed in the Expanded Universe by this point.
If it's been decided to leave at least one character's background a mystery, I suppose it makes sense to have it be the "wise old master". Given the mythic quality to Star Wars, I guess Lucas thinks losing this one last piece of Unknown would take from the universe more than any origin tale could put in?
