There is an interesting titbit from this months Star Trek the magazine. They are going over the 4 Seasons of Star Trek Enterprise and they have an interview with Dominic Keating who reveals that he recently auditioned for a part in JJ Abram's upcoming Star Trek XI film.

It was to play Jim Kirk's uncle in the midwest, where Jim grows up, before deciding to be a spaceman. Keating says that he got to read one scene, which he thought he gave a good read.

Unfortunately since he had already played a part in the Star Trek franchise, he figured it wouldn't come to anything. He didn't hear anything after, so presumed that this must have been the case.

Bummer. Wonder if Connor read for them, too?

And so what if he had played someone else in the franchise? How many roles has VArmstrong, JCombs, etc. etc. etc. had? That shouldn't have been a mark against him.

Not sure I could imagine Keating playing Jim Kirks uncle:wtf:

He doesn't look or resemble anything like the actor who is playing him and he doesn't sound American. Even when he played the Irish gangster on Heroes, his Irish accent was terrible. He comes across so british, in most of the parts he plays, I can't picture him as a typical American character.

he does give a funny rendition of when he met Angelina Joli on set of Beowulf when they were in the makeup room. They were getting their faces dotted and got chatting, and apparently she couldn't stop looking down at his crotch:wtf:. He finally pointed at his eyes with two fingers and said, "I'm here, love. I'm here."
He was a bit upset that they cut most of his part in the film but hopes that they will put it back in for the DVD.

Interesting news about Dominic trying out for the role of Kirk's uncle. I wonder why they didn't think other former Enterprise cast members should be in their new movie.

If Abrams and his team are Trek fans, like they claim they are, then are probably the type of fans who think of TOS as The ONLY Series. Anything relating to the other series is nonsense to them.

And his accent in Prison Break (French? Dutch? Belgian?) was nearly as bad.

As they have explained in many interviews, they are not. Abrams is a passive fan who was into TOS and TNG, but then got away from the franchise. Orci, I believe, is the hard core who has seen everything and has stated that the other series will be referenced in passing in the movie.

Would've been cool to see Dominic in a TREK movie, even if it wasn't as Reed or a relative. I'm hoping Abrams puts at least one Archer or NX-01 historical reference in the movie as a bone to the TV franchise.

I know with acting doing auditions is part of the course, but I am a little disappointed Dominic went back to lot after effectively getting sacked the first time. I doubt I'd have the gaul to do that, and I've been let go a few times. It's not as if he isn't getting guest shots on high profile shows. As Trek fans themselves, there was no way the producers weren't going to notice. Did he wear a false nose and dark glasses? :p

I liked Reed and think Keating is a pretty decent actor, but am glad he's not Kirk's grandfather. As a long-time Trekkie, I have really mixed feelings about the movie (despite it having my idol Leonard Nimoy and enjoying Simon Pegg) in it. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone save Shatner playing Kirk, Nimoy playing Spock, etc.

Thanks for the spoiler, OP.

Your welcome.

they said in the title of the thread it was about an audition for the movie.
if people dont want to know anything about the movie since the thread title suggests you will learn who keating auditioned for dont read the thread.

:)

by the way someone else has already played spock.. at least twice.
;)

He doesn't necessarily have to be a Kirk, he could be a British guy who married one of Kirks Aunts (if he has any that is).

Exactly... Or he could be a Kirk... A Kirk that chose to live in England and then return to Iowa...

I would love to see Keating in Treak XI
