I came to the SW party too late to have ever heard to used as anything but a joke.
But if people don't have access to it, it might as well not exist. The original is the one that changed how movies are made and marketed, and if somebody wants to understand why, they really need to see that version.
True, but we are under no obligation as fans to buy his changed versions. There will be plenty of fans willing to spend that cash so he will do just fine without my money. I just think we would have been better off had he put all this effort into making new movies to add to the series instead of continually fiddling with the ones he's already made.
Have you ever been raped? That's a strawman, though. They are available. Right now. On evilbay. I'm willing to bet a dollar you could find one locally without too much angst, too. Now it won't be blu-ray quality, but now we're changing the argument.
If we're going to retire the rape my childhood thing can we also figure out that people who say they want the originals generally mean to have high-quality versions that are reasonably priced, reasonably available and in up-to-date formats? You may not have to agree but can we get on the same page without all the silliness?

Kirkman, Yup, back then, most of the Country needed Sensitivity to Rape training. It was just coming out of a period where it wasn't taken seriously, and the general attitude was that "She had it coming, dressed like that".
Oh, course it's understood that it was said as a joke, how could you say it in any other manner? That doesn't excuse it, or make it any less offensive. Matter of fact, IMHO, it actually makes it even more offensive, that in this day, people still are making jokes about Rape in this manner.
People can explain all day long about the different meanings of the word Rape, like Politicians trying to explain is isn't is or that Monica Lewinsky working under the President's desk isn't sex, but, I think we all recognize the original intention probably wasn't one of the other definitions (It wouldn't have the same comedic "Over the top" punch). Additionally, it's not very easy to escape the connotation of using Rape and Childhood together like that.

Exactly. I'm tired of people saying we should just be satisfied with that extremely poor and faded DVD transfer. When we're talking about movies as groundbreaking and iconic as the original SW Trilogy, it's only natural to want the highest quality versions available.
