Kathryn Janeway - Post "Endgame"

To anyone still mad about Janeway's death...

In Star Trek Online she's still alive at least up to to some time after 2387 (I don't know if she's still alive and kicking in 2409 but it is implied), and they are coming out with novel tie ins to Star trek Online so she may show up there.

That's great news! I've toyed with the idea of signing up for ST Online, and this might be enough to make me seriously consider it. At least they know better than to kill off an awesome character! :guffaw:

Until she's killed on screen, she isn't dead. And there are lots of reasons that she could be on a ship (a la Kirk, Pressman etc).

It took nearly 2 years before I went looking for the books that killed my Admiral. I picked up "Unworthy" expecting (in vain I'm told) to find her resurrected yet again, but haven't been able to open it yet.

I know this probably isn't the reply you're looking for but if any book is going to make you the least bit accepting of the decision to kill Janeway it would be the book immediately prior to Unworthy, Full Circle. It covers 2378-2381 and is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Plus it features Janeway. :techman:

Oh, I read it, in fact I read it before "Before Dishonor" because I assumed that was the one she died in.

Speaking of things that bothered me about the new direction they went with, was the way B'Elanna lied to Janeway. After years with the woman, after saving and being saved more times than either could count, I found it strange to have these two be so out of touch.

Sigh.

It seems that I'm doomed to be disappointed. Even if/when TPTB bring her back, I don't know if there will be enough of the original tour de force left that I loved. I don't need a "Miss Q II".

My problem with this is that while the books aren't canon they are pretty much the only source of new stories. I've always enjoyed reading Star Trek books and it kills me that I don't feel like I can buy the new ones. I've stopped buying ST books of any colour (TNG, DS9, VOY, etc). I'm working through the DS9 relaunch when I can buy them second hand because I don't feel like supporting a business that has ruined my enjoyment of Voyager, my favourite Trek series.

So say we all.

I suspect that's why so many of us have turned to the keyboard to write our "own" relaunches, or turned to the editing programs to design our own music vids. We enjoy Voyager etc so much we can't let it go, and so we look for it where we can find it.

Remember it was the fanbase that kept Star Trek alive for so many years, with their fanzines and conventions between the first cancellation and its eventual multimillion dollar resurrection.

Ooh! Off to Google I go...

So far, I have to say, Voyager is ruining my enjoyment of Voyager. I look forward to the books, from what I hear.

I can only agree. Fortunately I do have most of the old books, at least the season 1-3 books (which are the best in my opinion) but I've realized that if I want to read a new, good Voyager story (where a certain mistreated character has the main role) , then I have to write it myself. Unfortunately I don't have the time to write as much as I would like to do.

I also keep my eyes open for other fan fiction stories and there are some really good ones out there. :)

Oooooh boy, I remember reading Before Dishonour - and the other two TNG books that were before it (or was it after, I don't even remember) - and I distinctly remembering thinking how utterly terrible those books were. The new crew mutinies against Picard - what?! The Borg come back, so Picard defeats them... then they come back again, and then again, and then again...

When I heard the Destiny trilogy was going to feature a Borg invasion, I was absolutely horrified. Thankfully, my fears were all for naught. I'm an avid Trek lit fan, I read everything I can get my hands on - TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Titan a bit of TOS and New Frontier sprinkled in occasionally. And out of all the post-series novels I've read (i.e. pretty much all of them) I think I can safely say that none have been as bad as those TNG novels - especially Before Dishonour.

I was outraged that Janeway was killed off in a TNG novel! It was beyond unnecessary! It was just plain old stupid!

I'm happy to say, while I've reread some of the post-Nemesis TNG novels, as well as DS9 and Titan, many times, that I haven't gone anywhere near those 3 godawful TNG books set pre-Destiny since I finished them the first time.

That said - Full Circle and Unworthy were great! I can't blame any of the Voyager writers for the unjust treatment of Janeway in a TNG novel. I personally think that the story, and treatment of all the rest of the characters, in both post-Destiny Voyager novels was pretty damn good, considering what they had to work with.

However, I'm always rather annoyed by the changes new authors make - like Golden ending Seven and Chakotay's relationship so abruptly upon the return to Earth. Did I think the relationship made any sense in the series, given they rarely spoke more than 2 words to each other in 4 seasons? No, no I didn't - nevertheless, ending it so abruptly irked me. The same goes for Beyer's killing off Golden's characters, and erasing all the little touches Golden had added! Its like every new author sets out to delete the other author's characters, relationships, and ideas, before doing their own thing.

And yet, when Janeway is killed off unnecessarily in a TNG novel, its a permanent fact. And (even more aggravating to me, because its 'canon') when Data is killed off VERY unnecessarily in the FINAL TNG movie, its also a permanent fact - and yet a dumb as bricks new android is tacked on as a replacement. :scream:

Ooh! Off to Google I go...

the events of the pre and post destiny story line for now do not exist in star trek online.

so janeway and a lot of other people, planets ect that were killed off and done away with in the destiny story line are still around in star trek online.

Hooray for ST Online, where KJ lives, even if mostly a footnote. I do even not consider Unworthy a Voyager novel, without Kathryn Janeway, only the MAIN character of the TV show (how would TNG fans feel if Picard was offed); she was hardly even mentioned (yes, I mostly read it). And Full Circle indeed just exploited her death, ugh. I will never read another "Voy" book (if there ever is one) without Janeway, maybe am only one fan but it's the least I can do, KJ lives! GS.

I agree with a lot of things you have written in your post, especially about Golden's characters being killed off and how unnecessary, rude and stupid it was to kill off Janeway.

I can give you a point about the Seven-Chakotay relationship too. I'm glad that Golden ended it but it could have been done better.

Anyway, I refuse to accept that Janeway is killed off, Data is killed off and Kes is ruined and destroyed. In my Star Trek universe and in my stories they are all still alive and well and I refuse to have anything to do with anything that contradicts that.

If, in fact, Kath is returned from what I now understand to be a Q existence, correct, then, perhaps I would be more forgiving to the PB PTB...but, still, Voyager if, without the others, is still a book series diluted more than ought to be, IMO. I've been away from them since the first two return novels, and the killing as I'd understood it killed any lasting interest in keeping up with the books. We'll see. As for her role as admiral, well, I guess it's something I will have to 'unwind' in my head, in regards at least to how I would perceive her-including in my fanfic, especially-as a higher-ranking officer in command of Voyager-where she ought to be! Kirk was no less 'above' his crew after he was promoted, that is from a psychological standpoint, and Kath would certainly be no more removed from without question anyone LEFT she was close to all those years on Voyager...and as knowing cohorts here like perhaps AuntieKate or KMC would say, she could do plenty, and still command Voyager. Just BRING HER BACK, I say. And, as for those not seen in the Voyager novels from the old crew, at least, like Tuvok, for Pete's sake, show them, if in a glimpse, on other ships, if that hasn't been done....

They won't bring her back though since there seems to be this obsession with linking all of the books together. The book I'm currently reading--Mission Gamma 1 Twilight--keeps referring back to the Gateways series (I think) which I haven't read yet. I was trying to read them in order, I even looked the order up online but it seems I still managed to miss some out.

Trying to read them in the correct order is a pain, if you don't buy them monthly or when they are published immediately. I still miss the numbering system the books used to have.

I like Janeway, but I also don't have a problem with her being dead in the novels either. Starship captains may seem immortal, but they really aren't and sometimes they do die tragically. Janeway's death was a major point of focus in "Full Circle" and her passing had major consequences for characters like Chakotay and Tuvok (whose reaction made me like him even more than I already did).

I think the chances of Janeway being resurrected will depend on whether or not she's referenced in any future Trek movie or TV show that places her past 2381 or whatever. In the meantime, I'm digging the both familiar and unfamiliar turns VOY has taken in the books of late.

Yet, according to the writers/editors, there is no "correct order." Each book stands alone. It must be true because they say so. Right? :guffaw:
