Oooooh boy, I remember reading Before Dishonour - and the other two TNG books that were before it (or was it after, I don't even remember) - and I distinctly remembering thinking how utterly
terrible those books were. The new crew mutinies against Picard - what?! The Borg come back, so Picard defeats them... then they come back again, and then again, and then again...
When I heard the Destiny trilogy was going to feature a Borg invasion, I was absolutely horrified.
Thankfully, my fears were all for naught. I'm an avid Trek lit fan, I read everything I can get my hands on - TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Titan a bit of TOS and New Frontier sprinkled in occasionally. And out of all the post-series novels I've read (i.e. pretty much all of them) I think I can safely say that none have been as bad as those TNG novels - especially Before Dishonour.
I was
outraged that Janeway was killed off in a TNG novel! It was beyond unnecessary! It was just plain old stupid!
I'm happy to say, while I've reread some of the post-Nemesis TNG novels, as well as DS9 and Titan, many times, that I haven't gone anywhere
near those 3 godawful TNG books set pre-Destiny since I finished them the first time.
That said - Full Circle and Unworthy were great! I can't blame any of the Voyager writers for the unjust treatment of Janeway in a
TNG novel. I personally think that the story, and treatment of all the rest of the characters, in both post-Destiny Voyager novels was pretty damn good, considering what they had to work with.
However, I'm always rather annoyed by the changes new authors make - like Golden ending Seven and Chakotay's relationship so abruptly upon the return to Earth. Did I think the relationship made any sense in the series, given they rarely spoke more than 2 words to each other in 4 seasons? No, no I didn't - nevertheless, ending it so abruptly irked me. The same goes for Beyer's killing off Golden's characters, and erasing all the little touches Golden had added! Its like every new author sets out to delete the other author's characters, relationships, and ideas, before doing their own thing.
And yet, when Janeway is killed off unnecessarily in a TNG novel, its a permanent fact. And (even more aggravating to me, because its 'canon') when Data is killed off VERY unnecessarily in the FINAL TNG movie, its also a permanent fact - and yet a dumb as bricks new android is tacked on as a replacement.
