Kate Mulgrew - Orange is the New black

Okay I put spoiler tags on my last post, you can put them in your quote of it Jrulez. Sorry I just didn't see anyone else posting here.

I have posted my Boo theory in the tv and media thread.

It would be nice if some of the many who view this thread felt comfortable posting. Since they are using the spoiler tags in the TV thread, I thought we should use them here for at least a little while. ;)

Now... a few thoughts.

Naturally they will circle about "mothers".

Love this exchange between Watson & Black Cindy (they were talking about how prisoners were on chain gangs in the old days, which led BC to reminisce about prison movies with Italian mobsters.) in the 13th episode.

Watson: Italians have weird shit with their mothers. They like, live with them for way too long.

BC's response is the cliff notes version of this entire series.

Black Cindy: (sighs) We all got weird shit with our mamas.

Now... lets talk about a season 1 fav... AKA Suzanne Warren.

Whenever Suzanne's mother came onscreen this season, she gave me the willies which I thought was simply listening to her "politically correct" mantras throughout Suzanne's life. Someone who spouted bible verses like Pennsatucky, but who didn't understand the spirit behind the verse. Think Soso when Chapman quoted Ghandi to her, that Soso should only speak if it could improve upon the silence. Instead of shutting her up, it let loose another course of verbal Soso diarrhea that did NOT improve the silence.

When 4 year old Suzanne threw her tantrum in the Maternity ward, Mommy didn't soothe her, a stranger did. When little sister went on a birthday party sleepover, her mother forced the older child into the party by guilting the host mother at the last minute. A situation that didn't make her feel like everyone else but made her feel more ostracized. When Suzanne somehow managed to graduate from high school, Mommy wasn't satisfied with just the cap & gown... she had to put HER daughter in the spotlight, on the stage, to do something Suzanne did not want to do... and it exploded in all of their faces.

Especially our sweet, slightly addled Suzanne.

We are used to seeing Suzanne hit herself. She did it all last season. She did it less so this season but it was still there. What made me sit up and take notice, however was when she beat / threw / kicked a drunken Poussey in the showers at Vee's behest.

Suzanne: THAT'S WHAT YOU...GET...WHEN YOU... DON'T. LISTEN. THAT'S WHAT YOU GET!AHHHHHH!!!!!

Why is Suzanne so susceptible to Vee's influence. It looks like she had/has an involved loving mother, but as we learned from "The Stepford Wives", looks can be deceiving.

Did the white mother adopt Suzanne for altruistic reasons and realize she didn't get what she bargained for? Did she ever truly love Suzanne or was she always a piece of grandstanding she could point to show how wonderful a "mommy" she was. Over the years did she resort to physical intimidation to corral Suzanne's outlandishness, and did that in turn create even more outrageous behavior.

Simply put, does Suzanne hit herself because she feels she's been bad or because she used to be hit when she was "bad"?

It would make sense to me, that the TPTB would give Suzanne that kind of backstory if only because the woman (older and younger version) seems so milquetoast that we couldn't imagine HER hitting anyone much less Suzanne.

But such a back story would explain why Suzanne would gravitate towards Vee.

Taystee didn't have a mom and she fell into Vee's spell, whereas Poussey had a mom and only briefly was tempted into the "family" because her best friend went there.

As to Suzanne don't forget..

Didn't she call Piper mommy when she was beating her in the now revealed, final scene of season 1?

Yes, she did! :bolian:

Which makes it a little icky that she wanted Pipes to be her prison wife.

ETA:

And wasn't that right after she freaked out after Flaca and Maritza made fun of her for wigging out in the Christmas pageant like she did at graduation.

I loved all the backstories this season. I'm usually terrible with backstories, feel like they interrupt the flow of the story and are dull, see SG:U. But Orange's are great and I'm hanging out for all the ones we didn't get and to see more of the ones we only got partially.

I want to see Boo's backstory! Boo was one of my favorites but I was shocked at her Red betrayal. I feel like some of it is because Boo wants to be the one that works the system herself.

When she got sucked into the Red family she's not liking being an equal to all these women she sees herself as better than. An equal in a crowd with Red as the boss, that's just not Boo.

So she realizes she can work the system by offering Vee a goldmine, she's smarter than those sheep who are just following Red's orders.

She's thinking outside the box, she's a lone agent brokering deals with the opposition blah blah in this story Boo is on top.

But of course it doesn't work out like that and she is left with nothing.

Teacake, I kidnapped your post. :alienblush:

I'll put it back when I'm done.

The more we learn about the people in this story, the more I'm shocked about what we don't know.

For instance, what did Red actually do to land in prison?

For that matter, what did Norma & Anita (the sleep apnea Italian) do because they have both been in as long (if not longer in Norma's case) as Red.

I think you are right about Boo. I don't think she wanted a mother and didn't realize that was what she was getting when she signed on with Red's crew.

It doesn't help that Red's maternal instinct includes a quick backhand if you do something stupid like whine about your girlfriend leaving (her son Vasilly sp? in the sewer tunnel) or treat the help badly (Boo at the greenhouse dinner).

Boo does expect to be at least an equal, but this lady has been queen bee for too long to entertain that possibility. :p

Unlike the other women, she didn't miss Red when she was AWOL she still had her gal pals (Nicky / Laura etc) to hang with, but once the family closed ranks against her, she realized her mistake. And hanging her white arse with the antigay black Vee was NEVER going to happen, even if she wasn't a snitch.

Boo's back story will be interesting, once they figure it out.

YES it was.

Looks like white mommy was a nasty piece of work.

Yes she was... unless I'm completely off base and she was an

What I love about the character of Red (besides the obvious) is how well drawn she is. She's tough and scheming but she's never going to be totally jaded and she is never going to be gangster in her sensibilities. That she had to sit down and think, am I being too harsh? Can people change? in respect to Vee.. that was really striking to me. She builds up this big tough woman wall but behind the wall there is still this idea of family and relationship. She is still the russian lady who does things for family, though how you do those things in prison is something she has to navigate despite having been in for a long time.

As to Boo, her downfall is her cockiness. Not her dislike of Red's version of family where she is just one of the crowd but the idea that she doesn't need that, that she can chart her own course with whoever she likes. Vee have better loot? Doesn't make her feel uncomfortable with some whacked out family dinner? Go to Vee. SOoooo cocky has no real understanding that Vee is not going to want her or give two shits about her. Vee is not stupid, she knows she can't use Boo as one of her brainwashed minions. Boo betrays Red because she doesn't want to be a sheep and Vee rejects Boo because she won't make a good sheep.

I think Boo was rejected by family and so rejects everything about family. See, discomfort at family dinner. Prolly had to flee whatever kind of family she did have and has been giving all such notions the finger ever since. I think she found that dinner confrontational.

What I don't understand about Red and Vee is why they...

... hugged that first time they met in episode (?) 3 during that showdown at "noon".

At one time they were "friends", but I doubt that continued after the beat down (fractured ribs, punctured lung) that Vee's minions gave newbie Red 14 years ago.

Was it just a show of power on both their parts? "

"I fear you so little, I'm willing to let you past my defenses where you could stab me with impunity."

Vee's arc in this season was impressive.

But I also loved Poussey this year, even when she was drunk off her ass.

Her dissection of Vee's character / motivations was almost spot on, when she called Vee a pedophile without the sex. If we look at what she did to JR, she was a pedophile WITH the sex.

Taystee was just lucky Vee's tastes didn't run her way.

Yeah I think it was your italicized sentence. I'm so unthreatened by you here's a hug.

Poussey, she's strong. She's strong to be able to forgive Taystee and renew the friendship as well as being strong to live through all that. We still haven't seen what she's in for.

I've also been thinking about how AMAZING it is to have Our Captain in a super popular, highly acclaimed, renewed for a 3rd season tv show. What have all those other cpatains done since hanging up their phasers?

Shatner: Highly acclaimed for being Shatner.

Stewart: Was in some movie.

Brooks: uhh..

Bakula: I bet he doesn't even have a real beagle.

MULGREW WINS!!!!!!!!!

Now lets be fair. :vulcan:

Shatner WAS in 101 eps of a "little show" called Boston Legal along with 5 eps of The Practice. Between these two he was nominated for 6 Emmys and won 2, and was also nominated for 2 golden globes and won one. Previously he had 5 appearances on 3rd Rock from the Sun and was nominated for an Emmy.

Lets not sully our girl by dissing the great Shatner. :rommie:

Speaking of "our girl"/girls.... and boy.

The girls really made the rounds this week

Its nice to see she doesn't really use a sharpie to put on her makeup.

Here she's on Letterman.

With the ubiquitous Tom Cruise question.

You have to sit thru 3 or 5 rounds of commercials to get to her full segment, but its worth it to hear about the brothel she stayed in when she was 15?16?

Its at minute 31.

Mulgrew wins by FAR.

Bakula did have Quantum Leap back in the day, so he was the lead in 2 shows. And yeah Shatner on Boston Legal.

But currently? I think Kate winssss! :D

^^ So sorry.

How about this one with Yael & Taryn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdaYK_stiMo

This means it took three visits on 3 days for the Today show to do OitNB, although its funny that after all the talk of diversity, we still haven't seen any of the Latinas

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdaYK_stiMo[/yt]

This is for Teacake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVZycyUYDl4

That means Big Boo is involved.
