Karl Urban on "Star Trek"

Uhura runs a Hooters? That's nuts, it's sexist tripe! the main corporate sign that our dignity has been sacrificed for a McJob!

We have actors, producers, directors, everyone under the sun clearly stating that "Star Trek" is NEW, but faithful to the same archetypes of the original in ways... Yet a lot of you believe it's a prequel.

IT'S A REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT.

Got it?

(I bet some people might actually crap their pants or slit their wrists when they discover how wrong they were about the whole thing. MANY are expecting a polished up version of Star Trek New Voyages. ROFL!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!)

Don't you ever get tired of hearing yourself repeat this?

Suppose you're right. What purpose does it serve to keep repeating this?

I mean, other than you somehow getting "bragging rights?" Is that, really, what this is all about for you?

If that's NOT it... why don't you give it a rest for a while? Seriously... we all KNOW what you think. Repeating it ad-nauseum doesn't really add anything to the conversation, does it?

Matt, you are standing on the edge of a warning for trolling here.

I want you to knock off this harassment of other posters about this 'reboot' thing, like YESTERDAY.

I get it. We ALL get it. In fact, everyone in the English-speaking world gets it: You think it will be a reboot.

But yours is not the only opinion that matters around here. And if you continue acting like it *is* the only opinion that matters, appropriate action will be taken.

If I shut up about this, will you ban yourself or get rid of your mod status when it becomes CRYSTAL CLEAR that it's a reboot? I mean, I can say it's my opinion that car tires are made out of mashed potatoes, but well, the world knows differently. I'm sort of sick of everyone posting pictures and trolling by saying it's a 100% faithful TOS prequel... All these pics of Quinto and Pine in the old TOS uniforms with the now ridiculous looking 1960s ray gun phasers. No, that isn't an opinion, either.

Please don't tell me I'm trolling, that's silly. I'm fighting the trolls who tell me it's the same old TOS. It's obvious that from what I've read most of the staff/mods here are of that opinion, so they defend those who believe the same ways. I've been presented with enough logical evidence to tell you that it's a reboot. I'm just trying to save lives... You know how nerds got all bent out of shape when Shatner said, "Get a life?" I mean, they were REALLY mad. They demanded an apology, and literally cried about it. Fans cried when Enterprise was cancelled. Fans cried when Data died... Imagine what they'll do when STAR TREK 1.0 is replaced with Star Trek 2.0? I honestly think there will be a few nutty extremists out there that'll hang themselves, or become such nuisances from their continual nitpicking about how trek 2.0 isn't legit, or WHATEVER they'll whine about.

I'm just trying to prepare them. It's like when everyone's dad says, "This is gonna hurt me more than it's gonna hurt you." When they pull their belt off. :guffaw:

I mean seriously, if Trek comes out and it's got them wearing the original TOS uniforms on the original TOS Enterprise, with beehives, and PAPER PRINT OUTS from the computer, or a COM-PU-TER THAT SOUNDS SIM-I-LAR TO THIS, I'll delete my account. It ain't gonna happen, though.

Even if it has none of those things, it doesn't therefore follow its a "reboot" however. Physical changes alone do not a reboot make.

Hoo-boy, this can't be pretty at all, no matter what the outcome. I mean, right or wrong, what does it all mean at the end of the day?

Either way... I'm planning on seeing it, since I think it will bring some vitality back to the franchise.

One word:

Valium.

If you had any serious intent to "instruct" as you seem to be saying, well...

Have you ever walked down the street and saw someone standing on the corner yelling at everyone about how the world is about to end? Suppose that they were right... their DELIVERY ALONE is enough to make everyone assume that they're total and complete lunatics and so even if they were RIGHT they'd still be ignored.

Your sense of hyperbolea on this matter puts you firmly into the "lunacy" camp.

Here is what you KNOW: NOTHING.

You might eventually be proven correct. Doesn't matter. You do not... CAN NOT... "know" this yet.

If you were to somehow be proven right, eventually... wouldn't justify your ongoing diatribes on the issue here. After all, even a stopped clock is correct twice a day. ;)

You really don't know anything. Neither, with one or two significant exceptions, does anyone else here. The majority of us recognize that we're simply extrapolating from a minimal amount of information we actually have.

You keep going on as though it's simple LOGIC to come to your conclusions, and thus anyone who comes to a different conclusion is being irrational. Yet, if you were being rational yourself, you'd have to admit that with the almost nonexistant amount of information currently available, NOBODY can support their statements with actual fact, and thus with actual LOGIC.

Those posters here who DO have direct, first-hand knowledge of the film (there are a small number of those) are being VERY cautious to avoid directly stating anything relating to the film itself. These people may say what they "expect" or so forth, but not what WILL be the case. There are other people, associated with the film, who READ what's posted here but do not post, themselves (and that includes, among other things, at least one paralegal from the PPC legal department, tracking for leaks).

You are SO CERTAIN that you know what's going on. But, barring you having direct first-hand exposure to the film's production, you know nothing.

What you are doing is taking what you WANT to be the case and claiming that this is what WILL be the case. Not because it IS, but because it's what you WANT.

Will you be proven right? Will you be proven wrong? NOBODY OUTSIDE OF THE PRODUCTION KNOWS!

That means YOU don't know.

You can try to convince. You can argue your case. But stomping your feet and insisting that what you THINK is going to be the case is what IS going to be the case, is just childishness.

You clearly believe that this is what things SHOULD be. Fine. If the movie ends up more faithful to the TOS style, you'll be disappointed and will think that the filmmakers have screwed up. Right?

Do you honestly think that's IMPOSSIBLE? That (assuming your perspective is CORRECT) they couldn't possibly mess it up?

There are others who think that what you, Matt, PERSONALLY WANT would be a mistake. They think that if the filmmakers do what you want, THAT would qualify as them "mssing it up."

This isn't a matter of hard numbers here. It's a matter of ARTISTIC TASTE. Your taste is different from most of the posters here. Fine... IDIC and all that jazz. But you really, really need to come down to reality and acknowledge that your PERSONAL TASTE is not, in fact, some form of "Deep Universal Truth" that we all need to accept and conform to.

Heck yeah, I'll be first in line (wait, winter 08? Maybe fiftieth in line, then). If it's in continuity, then fantastic. If it's a reboot, then it's a new start.

The funny thing is, whether it's old-canon or new reboot, whether it's good or bad, I'm probably going to watch it a dozen times over within a week of buying the DVD, too. Such is the life of a Trekkie :)

Who exactly is claiming that this movie is going to be a "100% faithful TOS prequel?" I haven't seen anybody making that claim. To begin with, it can't be 100% faithful because the original actors have been replaced. There may be a few who think they could get away with using the original uniform and set designs but I think the vast majority of people have always expected at least some changes. The Photoshopped pics of Quinto and Pine are nothing more than speculative approximations using the only templates we have to work with. If you want to take them as an intolerable affront to your personal dignity, you go right ahead, but don't expect the rest of us to join in unless you're willing to share some of whatever it is you're smokin'.

All I'm saying is that it's stupid to get your hopes up for some recreation fanwank.

Back in July, nobody had any idea.

As each day passes, it points more and more towards REBOOT.

And I don't just mean like a magic 8 ball saying "It may be true."

I mean, the odds of it being a REBOOT are about 99.9% at this point.

I don't see very many people here or elsewhere expecting to see the new Star Trek film be a recreation of the original tv series in any kind of fanwankery way. Most of us expect changes.

While it might take more than one hand to count the number of people who are hoping for that, it wouldn't take much more.

'Star Trek' is about the characters and the exploration of the human condition. Costumes, sets and props are of far lesser importance and as long as they honour the original look there's no need for them to be identical.

God, who would? The same costumes, ship and design aesthetics would look awful.

*sigh*

That really is not all you are saying. You are preaching your opinion as if its the truth. As others have remarked up in this thread - you cannot pass off opinion as fact.

I dont have much to add that hasn't already been said. This consistant derailing of every thread is becoming tiresome. By your definition - any minor differences (even cosmetic ones) from a 40 year old TV show mean that everything is thrown out the window and we start again.

Frankly (to some degree), I agree with you. I think it will be a reboot (of sorts), but the problem is that everyone has a different defintion of what a reboot actually is. A reboot to one will be not be so for others - some will think its a re-imagining. Cosmetic changes does not a reboot make in my opinion. We will still be arguing it in here after the fact. Waaaay into 2009...

At the end of the day - does it really matter?

If you end up being right - then ok, be right. Jumping around the forum from thread to thread shouting:

"Its a reboot, its a reboot!!!"

like some sort of deranged maniac (repeating the same thing over and over again) is just making you look silly. Save it for the "Will it be a reboot?", "Trek XI - Reboot?", "Its a reboot, I'm sure of it. " and "I don't think it will be a reboot" threads...

Easy there.

Just go get laid.

Then let's talk afterwards, okay?

Okay.
