I doubt it, throughout the show's history most companions have been quite young, so I don't see her as atypical, it's only Smith who's an anomolly (but in the same way Davison was, he's only a few years younger)
So long as Smith can play 900 and Karen is more Zoe/Leela/Sarah Jane/ Tegan/ Donna and less Peri/Mel/Martha then I won't complain...

There's no sodding way that you could mistake Karen Gillen for an Ice Warrior. Unless Moffat and Wenger are planning on putting her inside a rubber suit, and I really don't see them doing that.

She seems to have the minimum qualifications necessary to be a Doctor Who companion. Hopefully she can also act and has a compelling back story for her character.
