Karen Gillan to play Matt Smith's Doctor's Assistant

God I hope that her backstory isn't "modern day Londern girl".

No, it'll by modern-day Scottish girl.

I think this is quite likely, even though we really have little basis on which to make the assumption.

Don't see why it's such a bad thing though. As long as they're compelling characters in good stories, everything else is just window dressing.

Of course it matters... We want style, not substance, we want rubber foreheads, not deep characters, etc. etc.

I just think it's disgraceful that Moffat clearly has a Scottish Agenda. I don't care if he wants to be Scottish in private but I resent him forcing his lifestyle choice into his casting decisions for a show that is watched by a lot of impressionable young children.

If you're a parent would you really be happy if Doctor Who made your child want to be Scottish?

10th Doctor- Oh....another red head

Donna- OY!

I hear the new companion will be HETEROSEXUAL too. Damn producers and their insidious ulterior motives.

Heterosexuality is a lifestyle choice, and those who choose it shouldn't push it on all those innocent kids...

Wow!

Well speaking from my personal perspective this is great because she's:

A/ Pretty.
B/ A readhead
C/Scottish...

Seriously if she has a Scottish accent in the show I might well implode

One assumes she can act, and one assumes she also screentested against Smith so I have no issues whatsoever with her age (and seriously isn't it about the same as Davison with Sutton/Fielding?)

All I hope is that she isn't from present day Britain...I am wondering about that Celtic rumour that flew around ages and ages ago now...

We don't know that.

She's a chick with a dick and in the xmas special she pegs the doctor over the console.
She could be an alien, she could be a slave girl, she could be anything, just assuming she's "the youngest companion to go with the youngest doctor" may turn out to be true, but right now it's just an assumption
a slave girl, now dont go getting my hopes up

what evidence have you to support that theory?

Boy, what a disappointment! Sure, she's good looking but with a young (and even younger looking Doctor) I was hoping for an odd paring, an older companion or even a male one (remember those, BBC!!).
They'll look cute on T-Shirts and posters, seems that's all the Beeb are worried about these days. Cute couples are fine in other shows, Doctor Who should be quirkey, unusual and that starts with the Doctor and his companion.
*notes time of post*

49 minutes how long a new companion has, until fans start to slag her off.

:guffaw:

Someone tell me that's her outfit in the show!
sadly no, but when she in my Doctor Who dream tonight, its what she will be wearing. I only hope I remeber to dream Matt Smith, not David Tennant, as its unlikely Tennant will meet this girl ;)

2.) Despite what some bitter older people might think, young people are not, as a rule, idiots.

Agreed. However, I would hazard a guess that much of corporate programming the world over thinks everyone is an idiot. They only look at numbers and ratings. The moment a pattern makes them money, they will repeat said pattern until the ratings disappear. Only then will real change occur, if at all (assuming they don't just cancel the show). It is an equal unfortunate and fortunate period of business history for Doctor Who to come back into. Fortunate, that mediums and audiences are far more open to seeing eccentric, odd, and the fantastical (see: Comic Book Movies). It is unfortunate, because these days especially, television and the like are controlled absolutely and completely by ratings. There is no art, history, or legacy to appreciate as far as they are concerned. If there is a warm body, they will no doubt rape it until its cold, then move on to the next one. The consumer society and business model is what eliminates art from entertainment.

The only thing we can truly hope for is that the BBC has a long-term business model setup for Doctor Who and how it is presented, versus the American/Hollywood attitude of instant gratification.

As for this Karen actress, more power to her. If she's the actress from The Fires of Pompeii, then I'm thinking she'll be a lot of fun. I wonder what her character will be named?

When she's not acting Karen likes to play the piano and loves rummaging through vintage clothes shops
in that case, she is going to LOVE the TARDIS wardrobe, she could help 11 pick out his outfit.

Karen Gillan – Soothsayer

yep

I don't know anything about her, but man Doctor Who sure is going young. At least the two characters will be easy on the eyes. How they act though, well that's to be seen.
