News Kadin On Discovery Season Three and Possible Tie-ins

Big news!
"Fans awaiting Season Three of Discovery have speculated about how or if Michelle Yeoh‘s Georgiou would tie into the season, and if so, how that would happen.

In an interview with Assignment X, Heather Kadin, executive producer on Discovery, gave fans an answer. “We want to use Michelle Yeoh as much as possible,” she said. “Our plan is, she’ll be used throughout Season 3. The spinoff wouldn’t happen until after that.”

Even if the Section 31 spinoff came in the middle of the season, fans can expect to see Yeoh on Discovery for quite a while. “You’ll see her all of this season, and then most of next,” said Kadin.

Kadin also spoke about the Short Treks: Calypso episode and if it would be referenced in the future. “…It was such a gift,” she said. “The idea originally, I think, was just to tell these standalone stories that, in themselves, would be their own thing, and then the more in love with each one of them we became, the more we decided we really wanted to use them.

“We definitely want to deal with that story [Calypso] in particular down the line, and especially with that actor, Aldis Hodge. He was magnificent. So you’ll see sometime down the line, for sure.”

If Calypso is being tied in, the crew is somehow getting back to their own time or somewhere else without the ship.

I know Kadin isn't a creative type - she's more a suit and Kurtzman's second in command. But the answer about Calypso got me very, very concerned. She basically admitted it (like the other Short Treks) were meant as standalone stories. However, because of the impact of the story, and particular how much they like Aldis Hodge, they want to "work it it in."

This basically means on some level they're really giving things like casting desires greater weight than story integrity, and still flying by the seat of their pants. Because if you bring Craft into the story, you likely have to at minimum resurrect the whole V'Draysh thing and explain it. even if it wasn't your original intent. So you might end up constructing your entire season arc around an interesting musing Michael Chabon had because you want an excuse to use Aldis Hodge again. Anyone else think this seems like a horribly bad idea.

On the other hand, what Kadin said was so vague that it's possible we're not even going to see Craft until the fourth season. Which would be better, because it would give them time to figure out how the hell he found himself on an empty Discovery left vacant for 1,000 years to begin with, rather than trying to shoehorn it in now.

I don't see it as a bad idea at all. It's typically how TV production goes. Some of the best plot arcs of so many shows have been basically a case of "we need to write for this actor/actress, we loved working with them and would like to devise a way to make that happen". It's no different than them realizing how good Anson Mount was as Pike and pursuing that with no grand plan initially. Would that be a horribly bad idea?

I dunno. I tend to think a lot of the better modern drama tends to follow an already established storyline like a book series, and all-to-oft fucks it up when they attempt to jump up a character way past what their intended narrative role was. Cara Gee is great as Drummer in The Expanse, and I'm glad they combined story roles for three different book-universe characters for her. On the other hand, Bronn in Game of Thrones...not so much.

But my main issue here is that - due to what Calypso showed - there are huge strictures that must be placed upon Discovery if they wish to integrate Craft. Basically.

1. They will need to address the "V'draysh" to some degree. Though, this does admittedly provide some flexibility. Others tend to interpret the V'draysh as being an evil future Federation, but I think it's more interesting if you think Craft came from a Maquis-like faction, and there's no real "right side" in the conflict.

2. They'll probably have to return Discovery to the Alpha Quadrant to find Craft, given the real Alcor isn't far from Earth (unless they find Craft on his way home). This will make people who want a total blank slate in the Beta Quadrant, rather than checking up with what is going on with "future _______."

3. The worst thing by far though is they'd need to explain how Discovery ended up stranded for 1,000 years to begin with. It seems to imply, after all, that Discovery made it back to its own time (or earlier) and then sat around empty doing nothing and holding position for 1,000 years. I mean, they could always leave it unexplained for a future season, but my guess is they won't, requiring an entire episode of boring exposition (like last season's worst - Perpetual Infinity) trying to explain away a seeming timeline inconsistency rather than tell a genuinely entertaining story.

At least Craft is a creation of this series, rather than the result of stripmining the old shows.

Personally, I'm more concerned that we can't get rid of Georgiou and Section 31.

I was hoping she and Ash and Section 31 would exit into their own show
Ohh I misunderstood you.
Well that's what they're doing from the sounds of it.

It's kind of hard to get rid of Georgiou in DSC Season 3, she kinda got stuck with them at the end of Season 2. So something must happen for them or at least her to get back to the 23rd. Unless she's going to be part of a 28th century S31.

I think it'd be lovely if Discovery somehow met the backup EMH from Living Witness. I know they probably won't go there, but if they did, it'd be fantastic. He would have only had to be searching for remnants of the Federation for 110 years, and he finally meets one and it's from the 23rd century!

The backup EMH in Living Witness was in the 31st century.
