Justin Lin talks Trek 3

Will wait and judge the film not an interview.

Of course. But, hopefully, his background and saying the right things won't have people declaring the film a failure six months before it even opens.

Come on, Bill! We're Star Trek fans! On the internet! Of course they're going to deem Beyond a failure before there's even a foot of film shot.

In my opinion, I am becoming less cautious in my cautious optimism.

Back when I just knew him as "the guy who makes Fast and Furious movies" I was apprehensious. That quickly dissipated though when I found out he also directed the "Modern Warfare" episode of Community. So I was already reasonably happy with him - but this has put me over the edge - I am VERY happy with this guy now. This coupled with Pegg's numerous retractions over his prior statements is removing the funk around NuTrek Into Darkness left behind. I'm looking forward to it. :)

No Klingons and Romulans, eh? Sounds interesting, but why is it that the only thing I can't help but think of is the Son'a? I wonder if that means no Borg too. Or any familiar characters like Khan.

Other than the Son'a reference, I have no problem with that. We've rarely "boldly gone where none have gone before" particularly in the movies. Bring it, Justin!

It’s all new and fresh. The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species.”

Yes! I think this means we are going to see a new major alien civilization in this movie! :bolian:

It all sounds good.
It will be an exciting second half of 2015, hunting for clues & hints from the filming & post production.

I wonder what Lin's approach to secrecy will be.

He'll probably prepare several major press releases, only to have them inexplicably deleted with no trace left behind just seconds after a surprise visit from Producer JJ Abrams.

As long as it's about humanity, what's the point?

Star Trek has used the new worlds and new civilizations it's introduced as a conduit for thought-provoking discussion on humanity since its inception.

Exactly. Star Trek is about humanity even when it's not about humans. Perhaps especially when it's not about humans.

Yep. When we first met the Romulans, it was as much about racism and old wounds as it was about a neat submarine battle. When we first met the Borg, it was about hard lessons that come with bravado and the risks that come with rewards.

That would be awesome.

These aren't the spoilers you're looking for.

New worlds and New civilizations! :)

This has been the point of speculative fiction for many, many years. SF presents the ability to comment on a facet of humanity or human society. The emphasis on aliens is often used to point back to humanity in some aspect.

As the old Greek saying goes, "Man is the measure of all things."

So, do we now know the meaning of "Make it like Guardians of the Galaxy"?

I firmly believe the Earth-centered-ness of many of the previous Star Trek Films was dictated by the Suits, and the Directors/Producers weren't allowed to stray too far from Earth

I definitely like what he has said here.

You see, that's the problem. Saying everything is about humanity just comes off as self-serving. Like only humanity is awesome because we have emotions, problem solving skills and LOVE! Has Star Trek ever explored the idea that what makes us human isn't really that exclusive to a species? Has Star Trek ever truly dealt with that kind of subject? The only instance I can recall was that small exchange between Kirk and Spock in Star Trek VI.

Spock: Captain, we both know that I am not human.
Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everyone is human.
Spock: I find that remark insulting.

See? In a universe with a wide diversity of aliens, we finally have an exchange that tells two sides of what this universe is all about. Traits that humanity holds very dear to itself exist in other species yet are still willing to acknowledge that they are not human. It's certainly a more forward thinking exchange than what Star Trek into Darkness tried to pull.

Spock: Vulcans cannot lie.
Kirk: Then I'm talking to the half-human part of you.

Because that's the only part that matters, isn't it?

Also, from marketing stand point, saying that your Star Trek movie is just about "Examining Humanity" doesn't really say anything. It's too broad a description and the basic stories of Star Trek have always been about conflict, understanding and problem solving. It's no different than saying "Our story is about character" and leaving it at that.

That's why we have space battles! To teach the alien scum of the galaxy a thing or two, and know their place!

(I am just kidding!) :D

See? In a universe with a wide diversity of aliens.

There are no aliens in Star Trek and never have been. There can't be. There are only characters created by human writers that are identified for story purposes as "aliens" and usually required to embody some subset of human motivation and behavior in order to make them seem distinct. In every case they are less than human because they're not permitted to exhibit a full range of human behavior.

The Tholians, for example, are territorial and belligerent people - they exhibit no behavioral traits that are not human because human writers invent them to act in a dramatic story.
