Justin Lin is boarding the USS Enterprise and will direct the third installment of Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek” franchise.
The hiring of Lin came two weeks after Roberto Orci backed away from the directing gig.
Orci had been hired for the helming job after J.J. Abrams had to exit the sequel due to his commitment to direct Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
David Ellison’s Skydance Prods. is producing along with Orci and Abrams. Paramount has not yet set a release date for “Star Trek 3.”
Patrick McKay and John D. Payne worked on the most recent draft of the script.
Lin directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth installments of the “Fast and Furious” franchise.
Last year’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” grossed $467 million worldwide, including $229 million domestically.
Lin is repped by CAA, Cinetic Management and Sloss Eckhouse Law Co.

Excellent news moving things forward.
Except I thought the release was confirmed to be 2016?

Sounds good to me! While I haven't seen F&F 6, the guy is apparently very capable as a director. This should work out very well.

Vin Diesel as a Klingon?

If they want to make it more like Guardians, they've already got Saldana and Chris P.

I...have no strong feelings one way or the other. So thats a step up I guess :p

EDIT: Turns out Lin directed the Modern Warfare episode of Community? I always thought that was the Russo's. Given that, tip me onto the "enthusiastic" side of things.

I'm still waiting for someone to give me some examples of his work that show he has an eye of personal moments or any kind of heart or emotion of any kind.

He clearly has an eye for action (but it's not like JJ didn't have that). This guys credits kind of scare me. He just doesn't seem capable of delivering the same level of content as ST09 and STID.

People complaining about how Trek is nothing but CGI and action may get their wish with this guy. Perhaps to the point where they will be begging for JJ to come back.

Mentioned in another thread, I'm not familiar with his work. However, he knows how to put butts in seats! Looking forward to see what he can do.

All of these things are down to the writing/script. He directed a handful of good/great episodes of Community - that alone has given me some faith, because Modern Warfare was an amazing half hour of TV that looked and felt like a major movie.

Given that Orci's script was panned, I wanna know whos writing it - if its Orci alone of if he's got some new writing partners or replaced entirely.

He's the director, his job is to help tell the story to the audience. However, he isn't the one coming up with the story.

I haven't seen any legit sources confirming any of this.
Unless I missed something, it was all bs rumors by Faraci & Para Mobius.

^^Exactly. We went from a "rip-off of Planet of the Titans" to "Time travel movie where Vulcans, a new race and the Enterprise race to get a time travel device" (debunked by Orci himself) to Paramount wanting it to be a "Guardians of the Galaxy" film.

the guy who did the Fast & Furious films? urgh, how bad is the plot of this thing going to suck? at this rate I see it being two exploding ships racing through the galaxy for no reason at all, it's going to have an even worse plot than Into Darkness did I can see it coming.

thanks so much Paramount for destryoing Star Trek, I would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather have another proper Trek series on Netflix or something than more reboot films that have plots so bad they make even The Phantom Menace's look good.

Cool, he was my choice and as long as it's a good script I'm sure he'll deliver a good movie.

Not sure if serious

Better Luck Tomorrow, his first solo directorial effort, a crime drama that had very strong characters and interactions. A movie that sought to subvert the stereotype of the model minority, as Roger Ebert put it, by "not making race the point but simply the given."

I've never watched any of the Furious movies. However, his work on Better Luck Tomorrow was excellent, so I am excited at the news Lin is directing the next Trek.
