News Justice League Dark among three JJ Abrams-produced series for HBO Max

Cool, I'm a big Abrams fan, and a JLD series has a lot of potential.
I wonder what this will mean for Constantine on Legends of Tomorrow?

Who knows what it means for Constantine? Most likely each season will only be 10 episodes so Ryan could do both series if contracts and filming schedules allowed. But I would really like a darker Constantine than we are getting, and would be more than happy to see somebody else play the character at this point.

Matt Ryan playing two totally disparate live-action versions of the same character full-time simultaneously is very unlikely.

If Constantine does show up in this JLD series, he'll be most likely portrayed by somebody new.

This just seems like unnecessary oversaturation.

Even the biggest fans have their limits...seems foolish to split a fanbase

Matt Ryan.. Is constantine.. so.. For me , Him or nothing.. :)
Good to see a JLD series.. crying in my bear that is from JarJar.. :barf2:

Matt Ryan is OK as Constantine but I've never been completely sold by his take on the character. That said, the character seems kind of pointless on Legends, his adventures often even being tangential to the main plots so in my mind it would make sense to prefer another property over continuing on Legends.

It still sucks that we didn't get the Del Toro version, I think he would have done a great job, but this...might be ok? I guess? It could go either way, although being on HBO is a big negative (I wonder if it will manage to go 5 minutes into episode one without showing nudity or people fucking).

I just hope a JLD TV series doesn't use the shitty plot point of "Constantine is the best magic user ever, he even taught Zatanna literally everything because he is so great, and everyone must bow to his awesomeness" of the shitty New 52 JLD and the animated movie. I fucking loathe Constantine in the comics because of that shit. He's a demon hunter/exorcist with moderate general magic ability, before the New 52 he had never been the strongest or most skilled magician (and he sure as fuck wasn't more skilled as or the teacher of Zatanna). Honestly, I'd be happy to have him just not be involved at all, there are a bunch of great characters that DC owns that could be on a JLD team.

It's not on HBO, it's on HBO Max, which is the overall streaming service for Warner Bros, so it won't necessarily be done in the HBO style. It's basically their version of Disney+ or Peacock.
Most likely nothing at all.
I know there isn't a rule limiting this kind of thing, but I could still see them not wanting to have two different versions of the same character on different live action shows airing at the same time.
This just seems like unnecessary oversaturation.

I think this is just because they want more than one DC series on HBO Max. I do have wonder what this means for DC Universe since the last two new DC shows they've announced have been for HBO Max, and that's on top of the fact that Stargirl is airing on both DC Universe and The CW, and the next season of Doom Patrol will be on DCU and HBO Max.

Do you have actual concrete information this time or just more guesswork on your part?
Have they made some kind of a official statement somewhere that they are definitely, absolutely sticking with DCU for the long haul?
Just out of curiosity, are you involved with Hollywood productions like this stuff in some way? You always seem to have lot more definitely concrete information about what will and won't be happening with this kind of stuff than the rest of us.
It just seems a bit suspicious to me that the big DC streaming service isn't the home of the two next DC streaming series, and that their next shows are being shared with other places, in this case HBO Max and The CW.
I understand they need stuff to fill out HBO Max, and I could see doing one DC series as a draw for the comic book nerds, but having another one on there is unexpected, especially when they already have another one that'll be on both services.

Yes.

I spend a significant amount of time on the DC Universe website in their community, and one of the most-repeated refrains from the Moderators of said community is that DC Universe's status is completely unaffected by HBO Max because of the fact that DC Universe's goal and purpose is not to be a streaming service, but a fan-centric community platform that encompasses numerous avenues of media and marketing from comics to giveaways to streaming.

HBO Max's existence does not affect DC Universe - which continues to be supported by DC - because it offers something that HBO Max will not, regardless of how much DC-related content may or may not be available on the former platform.

It may not mean anything. We don't even know yet if Constantine will be in the Justice League Dark series. Sure, he has generally been a JLD member in the comics, but then, Barbara Gordon is the head of the Birds of Prey in the comics and she's nowhere to be seen in the movie of the same title. And there wasn't a trace of Dr. Strange, Hulk, or Valkyrie in Netflix's The Defenders.

Huh? On the contrary, the last two seasons' overall arcs have both been driven by supernatural villains' pursuit of revenge against Constantine, first Neron and now Astra. Basically everything the Legends have been through for the past season and a half has been a consequence of Constantine's past mistakes.

It seems to me that Constantine's story feels separate from whatever the Waverider team is doing. It may be the cause but it seems like most times what he's doing could be a separate show altogether. :shrug:YMMV

On an unrelated tangent though still connected to Legends, check out what I found, short film by Caity Lotz starring Maisie Richardson-Sellers. EDIT: Just realized this is the JLD thread not the Legends one...

Separate, yes, but not tangential, since his problems are driving the entire seasonal arcs. More a parallel than a tangent.

That's mostly true, although the idea of Constantine as a greater threat in certain circles dates back to at least The Books of Magic:

(From TV Tropes)
  • Neil Gaiman is good at these. During the first The Books of Magic, Zatanna takes Timothy Hunter to a party attended by a wide variety of powerful evil magicians. We are led to believe that everyone at the party is either Affably Evil or a Punch-Clock Villain on their off time, or both, until the party's host announces Tim's presence and announces that a hefty price has been put on his head ("Which need not be attached to his body"). Things are pretty tense until all of a sudden, John Constantine appears in a doorway, and everyone stops to watch him calmly light his cigarette.
John Constantine: "No one touches the boy. That's right, the boy's mine. And in thirty seconds, me, and him, and the witch are going to walk out of here. You know who I am. Or you ought to. You know my reputation. Now, does anyone really want to start something?" (Nothing happens) "Right. Come on, you lot. We're moving."

So, in other words, no.
