Just watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture...

Broccoli said:
the MA page supplies a reliable source for it's information, namely the Inside Star Trek written by the people behind the show.

And, IIRC, previous works by other people behind the show had a different, long-standing opinion: Gene Roddenberry in "The Making of ST", David Gerrold in "World of Star Trek", and others perpetuated the suggestion that NBC had demanded to start TOS on TV with a "B.E.M." ("bug-eyed monster") episode and featuring Dr McCoy, not Dr Piper.

Therin of Andor,

Then I would say we are both right, that we both cited reliable source books.

Cheers mate,

PS. Thank you Broccoli for pointing out that Memory Alpha does provide a reliable source, the book "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story" (which I used to support my point in my previous post).

It is not.

As of now, it is unlikely it will appear on Blu-Ray. The main reason given, I think, is that the new effects that were edited into it were not done on film, thereby making a transfer very, very difficult to the point that they would have to redo it again.

I am sure others know more on this and can elaborate.

I really enjoy TMP and it is one of my favorites. I love all the scenes showing how the original crew got back together. Once Spock gets on board, a great scene by the way, is when the movie slows down for me. But even though it is a slow moving picture I really do like it a lot because it does have some great character development. I still get thrilled when we find out V'ger was Voyager VI.

Agreed. when i saw it the first time at the theatre it was in one of those large theaters they use to have. It was sold out...had the laser show...and when those three klingon ships appeared, the entire audience cheered. And then went Ooooohh and awwwww when they zoomed in on the lead ship and panned around the top of it...i still remember that to this day and it was great...

Correct me if I’m wrong because I’m going off a vague memory here, but I think I remember that when TDE was in production Hollywood was threatened by the prospect of a SAG strike and Paramount had a contingency plan to release ST:TMP:TDE theatrically if the strike came to be. How could the effects have been good enough for a theatrical release if they weren’t rendered in anything better than 480p?

Who knows. But the artists behind the effects have gone on record stating that they weren't created at HD resolutions. Re-rendering them (which isn't far from possibility unless I am mistaken) would solve the problem and make the DE releasable.

Could have done with out the funky blurry lenses though. I forget what they're called, but they keep the subject in focus, but blur around them. Very odd.

Those are split diopter shots.

Right! Thanks for that. I can see why it would be used, but it looks odd to have the backgrounds like the bridge consoles go from blurry to sharp like that. For years, after I read Harve bennet's claim that they used Vaseline on the lenses, I thought that was what he was talking about. Then I figured, why wouldn't it blur the actors? So much for me...

I think it was money.
