Just started watching Voyager again

I've primarily been a TOS/TNG/DS9 fan, but VOY has had a special place in my heart as it was the only series I watched from start to finish during its actual run. It also got my friend into Trek. Whilst I never liked it as much as DS9, it always kept me entertained, and I also liked the EMH, Seven, Janeway and B'Elanna.

In Europe (and Australia maybe?) there has been a new release of Voyager DVDs. Since they're cheaper than what they have been (about £80 on first release!) I finally picked up season 1.

I'd seen Caretaker loads of times before (it was one of about 5 Trek VHS I owned way back when) and enjoyed it enough, but it was my first viewing of Parallax since 1996! It was like a brand new episode. Okay, it was full of technobabble - the last 10 minutes or so were a total mess. I was loving the character interaction though; everyone was finding their feet in the Starfleet/Maquis jumble. I also never noticed how early Seska was actually introduced.

I can't wait to watch more. Although Time and Again was a bit poo (or my memory of it was), at least there is Phage and Eye of the Needle coming up!

Glad to see you're getting back into Voyager! I think that S1 is one of the best in all of Trek, and Caretaker is certainly the best pilot. And Parallax might be a load of technobabble (and not even remotely close to science) but it's still a fun episode.

I have to agree that Kate Mulgrew was right on this one.

She said a long time ago that Voyager would grow on the fans and they'd come to enjoy it years later.

Go on Kate, wit yo bad self.

Speaking of Kate Mulgrew, the first thing I did when I tore the shrink wrap off my boxset was shove in the special features disc. The interview with her on the 'Time Capsule' segment really raised my impressions of her. She always comes across very well in interviews that I've read in the past, but with the way that she composes herself and speaks about her work, I think that she is very classy and intelligent. :)

Yeah season 1 is pretty good. I like the new artwork they have put with the cheaper boxsets. Much nicer then those clunky plastic boxes.

Voyager does seem to have aged rather well. :)

It's ironic that the shows lack of continuity now makes it a striking (and interesting!) contrast to the relentlessly-serialized scifi currently pervading the airwaves.

I love BSG as much as the next guy. But let's face it, sometimes the reset button can be FUN! :D

Oh I love BSG but there is the odd thing that I wish they had reset away -EvilLoveQuadrilateralofDOOM! I'm looking at you.

A few ramblings:
'Time and Again' was about as naff as I remember it, but I was pleasantly surprised by 'The Cloud.' I only remembered the dull 'nebula' B-plot but had somehow managed to forget all of the great characterisation in the episode. It was brillaint! 'Phage' was a good introduction to the Vidiians, and used Neelix in a slightly less annoying way than he has been so far.

'Eye of the Needle' is one of my favourites from the first season. Having a possible route to Earth only a few episodes into the series makes it quite obvious that the crew won't succeed in their attempts. What makes the episode interesting though is the character's interactions, a really good guest Romulan, and a time travel twist at the end used effectively. I never saw it coming (or at least I didn't the first time I saw it).

Looking at the rest of the season, 'Ex Post Facto' and 'Emanations' are next (and a bit meh), but the rest looks interesting.

I guess I'm too American.

So if you help me with British slang, I'll help with American street slang.

What does "naff" mean?

Sorry, naff means crap. A bit shit. :D

Although I do like it when they allude to Kes' possible/future mental abilities. So that's less naff. ;)

Got it, thank you.

Oh yes Loved Eye of the needle! and Faces (or was that season 2?) either way I might get the dvds out tonight and have a little time warp back to 1995 and pretend I haven't seen them yet :D

Eye of the Needle is probably my favorite episode of Season 1. It was the best use of the Romulans in years (reminding us that they're not all slippery bastards) and the twist ending was quite tragic - even though we knew they wouldn't get home, we thought that Starfleet might finally know what had happened. Janeway's line "Then let's move on. We've got a long way to go." pretty much sums up Season 1 in a nutshell.

I freely admit that I am a Harry/B'Elanna shipper, and it probably started with this episode. They had a great dynamic in the first couple of seasons, and it's a shame that TPTB didn't pursue it.

Yeah that line really captured the feel of the show at that point, some where along the way that aspect of the ship's isolation and desperate hope got lost unfortunately.

They were pretty interesting together. I think I saw something even as early as "Caretaker". She at least made Harry look interesting which really says a lot.

I'd have preferred a possible Harry/B'Elanna relationship compared to the allusions to Janeway/Paris that are squicking me out at the moment. ;)

*Revives topic from the dead*

I've been busy with 24, Ugly Betty, and my new love Heroes (*swoon*) but I've just about made my way through the first season. I'm on 'Jetrel' now - the start of the annual 'Neelix does something interesting' episode. As annoying as Neelix became over the years, he's been somewhat interesting in this first season, and even believe Ethan Philips to be somewhat underrated.

'Ex Post Facto,' 'Emanations' and 'Cathexis' didn't do a lot for me, but the rest of the episodes have been quite good. I never remembered properly how many episode Seska was in before she was unmasked as a Cardassian, but there was a nice little arc with her. Nothing extravagent but nice nevertheless.

The Maquis/Starfleet conflict hasn't really existed amongst the regular cast since 'Parallax,' but there was a nice part in 'Prime Factors' where B'Elanna talked about how she'd changed since becoming a senior staff member.

Ooh, B'Elanna - 'Faces' was great. Dawson (or Biggs-Dawson back then) really sold the fully-human, fully-vulnerable B'Elanna, as well as the super-aggressive one too.

I bought season 2 in anticipation of finishing season 1 soon. I know that the things that I'm enjoying continue in a similar vein, but the show also becomes somewhat inconsistent. Oh well, I'm enjoying my newfound love for early-Voyager.

P.S. I remember 'The 37s' as the season ender, but it's part of the season 2 boxset. Was this just a UK-airing thing?

^ a few episodes were held over from the first season and aired as part of season two originally. The aired season one ended with Learning Curve IIRC.

Going by production order, the tail end of season 1 SHOULD be:

Learning Curve
Projections
Elogium
Twisted
The 37's

Yes it did get lost, but I like to believe that the writers lost it on purpose. You see, as we saw on the show. You turn into a family after going through what they did, and you are no longer desperate because you are with who you want to be with.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

I envy you and plan to do the same once the dvd's come down in price to a reasonable level (as TNG, TOS and DS9 have).

Voyager, thin packs, $50 per season, i would so be there in a heartbeat... Hi Paramount! *waves*
