Just started Stargate!

So I'm on the third episode of Stargate SG1. I haven't seen the movie. So far, I'm definitely entertained (granted, I laughed at some of the botched military protocol in the writing) but, so far, definitely fun to watch. I do find the fact that there is 10 seasons and a spinoff series a bit daunting (I'm watching via Netflix) but I'm not opposed to the commitment of a show like this if it stays compelling and can hold my interest.

The characters seem a bit "planned" right now; we have the rough guy main character, the supporting smarty nerd, the confused loyal alien, and the strong-willed woman with something to prove... but I'm definitely willing to give them a season or two to develop (the characters in Babylon 5 seem a bit contrived in the first few episodes until they get a feel for their characters).

Anyway, this is where I am. Should I expect more of "stand-alone" episodes? I started this show because I was shocked at how many bloody seasons it has. Looking forward to something new!

Season 1 is stand alone a lot until the end, then the next several seasons are a mix. The last few seasons are really arced.

However if you want to save time stop watching after season 6, and you can skip all but the first season of Atlantis, it doesn't lead anywhere.

While the quality of the later seasons is a hotly debated topic among fans, I would stick through the end of season 8. By then, it more-or-less wraps up most of the plot strings that began with season 1. If you are still hungry for more, by all means, venture into seasons 9 and 10, but the storyline is very different.

Don't let Emancipation scare you away. The series improves over the course of the season. I think you'll grow to love it.

It's like the X-Files for me. At first I love it so much then it starts to take a backstage position (but I never started disliking the series). I think most things are like that.

^ Yep...Women's Lib vs Mongols in space. :D

Don't forget Jackson and O'Neill drooling over Carter in the sexy blue dress.
They weren't the only one...

Some women clean up nicely.

I'd say to go ahead and watch the whole series. There are many more good episodes then bad.

I think the first 4 seasons are the best, but I watched every bloody episodes of the whole 10 season because I loved the characters (especially Daniel) so much.

The fact that is also doesn't take itself all that seriously from time to time is also a huge bonus. Hubby and I still quote "Wormhole Extreme" to each other all the time.

I did the same thing you are doing about 3 1/2 years ago. Late 2005 I started watching SG1 from season one on. Had a blast, and was able to catch up in time for the shows final episodes in season ten. So many episodes, it will take you a long time. You have 1 hollywood movie, 2 other movies and 10 full seasons. Enjoy :)

For me it was Atlantis that got me into SG1.

My favorite episodes are the season finale of season 7, written as a series finale in case it did not get renewed. In fact from the end of season 5 onward each season finale was written as a possible series finale with the possible exception of season 9. (I don't remember about that one)

I've just begun watching through once again. A quality, smartly written show, but completely different from, say, Battlestar Galactica. Season one does serve mostly as an introduction of the basic premise, but it does the smart scifi and the adventure at the same time. Also begins laying seeds for ongoing plotlines, especially towards the end.

O'Neil: What's this?

Teal'c: It's a zatnikatel.

O'Neil: How about we just call it a zat gun?

Teal'c: ....

Coolness...

So, I had watched the first couple seasons before but for whatever reason just lost interest and stopped watching even though I owned the first 5 seasons on DVD.

I recently restarted watching them from the pilot movie on and have now made it through Season 7's two parter called "Heroes" which ended up being quite good.

I gotta say I'm enjoying it much more this second time around and appreciate the arc driven nature of these later seasons. I still wouldn't put it quite on par with Bab 5 or DS9, but it's taken several sizable steps up in quality in my mind and I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the series and moving onto Atlantis.

Did I watch the same show as you?

Smartly written? It was written fine, and even in the first few years when it was much less silly/dumb then the later seasons I wouldn't call it a smartly written show. :)

It's a fun popcorn flick like ID4, which was never a sequel idea to Stargate!

Indeed.

I remember quite clearly when SG-1 was brand new, all those years ago. I'd always enjoyed the movie and the continuation (Children of the Gods and The Enemy Within) were pretty solid.

Then came Emancipation, The Broca Divide (which in fairness has grown on me) and I very nearly quit the series there and then.

Fortunately it got better. Much better! Give it a chance! (and don't skip the episodes either...).
