Just Started Stargate Atlantis

I've only seen a few of the original and this one was on super sale so I grabbed the first season.

Now admittedly I have the flu and took some codeine and then felt better so drank a couple glasses of wine and then watched the pilot but.. I almost died laughing through the whole thing. It was just so full cliches and lines you just knew were coming. I was also shocked to see that it was not a product of the 90's as the whole thing had that feel.

Don't get (too) irked with me though fans, I have long realized that I enjoy even mediocre sci fi more than excellent stuff in other genres and I'm sure there are good bits to come. Right?

Also.. only TWO women so far? Seriously, all those men milling about being all buddy with each other.. needs more women.

Ooooh, right, Stargate Atlantis exists! Thanks for reminding me :D

I'll have to remember and borrow the DVD sets my cousin mentioned buying some time ago since I'm basically the same as you: Only saw handful of episodes originally when they first aired.

While Atlantis has a good amount of entertainment value, don't expect anything terribly deep. And some of the story direction decisions just don't work very well from time to time.

If you're not interested in the series during the first season -- the best year of the show -- it's only going to get worse from here.

As far as the women go...yeah, Stargate Atlantis does a pretty poor job dealing with women on the series. Weir is rather underdeveloped as time goes on, Teyla is often a complete nothing of a character, and there are other things that are even more annoying later. But I'll let you get there.

Atlantis was entertaining.

I came to love/hate Rodney.

But it does say something that my favorite was Zelenka, and he was not even a full cast member.

It's a solid show. Not as good as SG-1 or SGU I don't think, but very watchable. I'd disagree about season one being the best too, for me season four was better.

She did only watch the pilot, though, and that's hardly the strongest episode of the season. I liked season one as well, but thought much of the first episode was uninspired.

Teacake: give it a couple more episodes. SGA never really breaks away from recycled sci-fi clichés, but the later S1 episodes do a better job of making them entertaining.

Oh I have no intention of giving up after a pilot, or even one season. See: TNG. Just blathering my first impressions here to see what people thought of the show.

The first season is definitely the best. It does a really good job of combining standalone stories with the overall arc of the season, and it has likable characters. Not the most brilliant show in the world, but I still think it's a lot of fun.

Not a bad series, but season 1 is definitely the best. Where it really falters, in my opinion, is that it never really tries to be its own show- it tries too hard to be SG1 with a new group. Some of its best episodes are when it does things that SG1 didn't do or would never do.

Well last night I ended up watching three eps in a row because Suspicion left me wanting another ep.. which is the first the series really grabbed me. I did have a good laugh at Childhood's End though. At the title my kid says to me "oh no, everyone is going to grow old and they will have to stop the aging disease.." Then when we first see all the kids in the forest with arrows I said, "IT'S MIRI!" Then when we find out they sacrifice themselves at 24 my kid says "IT'S LOGAN'S RUN!"

Still, it was a good ep even with all those familiar elements.

The Wraith are impressively creepy, even if they do make me think of Lady Sylvanas quotes. The characters are a rather bland, and the one who isn't (Rodney) is starting to get on my nerves. I keep hoping Teyla turns into something more than Amazon Forest Woman.

The characters get better once you get to know them. I thought they were pretty boring at first, too.

I'm actually really enjoying watching sci fi which is just story, not soap opera, not trying to be challenging or edgy, no sexing it up. It's nice comfort food stuff.

That's why I love it. It's just a bunch of people with guns having adventures on other planets. Sometimes things explode.

Now admittedly I have the flu and took some codeine and then felt better so drank a couple glasses of wine and then watched the pilot but
:rommie::bolian:

That's the spirit! Joe Flanigan probably looks even better, huh?

It was just so full cliches and lines you just knew were coming.

Even whacked out on codeine, Stargate will always be Stargate. I got thru it just looking at Joe (occasionally with alcohol-based assistance) but if that doesn't do it for ya, well, ya gave it your best shot.

Rodney is more my type. Yeah I like 'em slightly neurotic. Also always liked that slightly plumpish look on a guy.

But.. NEEDS MORE WOMEN!!

Seen a few more now, saw the one about Species 8472 last night. OOOooooo.

Wait until, you get to the 5th season because Bill Nye, the Science Guy guest stars in an episode. It is also fun to watch actors from other scifi shows guest star on Atlantis. That's always a good time. It's a fun series, entertaining. Better than another reality show :)

Tonight it was Chief O'Brien! That was super. At one point he said, "come, we are about to have our harvest meal" and I yelled "THAT KEIKO HAS MADE". Yeah.

You haven't seen the last of him.

But really, Colm Meaney pops up everywhere. He hasn't been O'Brien for a long time.
