Just Started SNW RE: Uhura

Not picking on her. Please re-read my post.
Your original post states that Gooding doesn’t look like Nichols. Which is true. But Gooding is playing Uhura not Nichols, so that’s a nonstarter. Uhura looks like whichever actor is playing her. You say you can’t connect to her, but fail to explain why. You just fall back on actor X doesn’t look like actor Y. Which is not a requirement to play Character Z.

None of the actors were cast based on the physical resemblance to the original actor who played the role, unlike, say, the Abrams films. Even Robert April is played by an African American actor when his last portrayal in TAS showed him to be white. And apparently transporter chief Kyle is now Asian. It is up to the individual viewer’s interpretation of what they are seeing if these are still supposed to be the same characters, or that they are a different version of those characters from a different continuity, like the Abrams films were, that happen to have similar backstories or take part in similar events, etc.

These are characters, and they can be interpreted a bunch of different ways by a bunch of different people. I think SNW's Uhura is a little too squeaky clean and goody two shoes for my tastes, and liked the Kelvinverse version more for having an edge. But I'm still enjoy SNW's version.

You said you expect Gooding to "somewhat resemble Uhura" by which I assume you mean Nichelle Nichols. I was pointing out that most of the other actors playing characters from TOS don't resemble their original actors either. So why is is Gooding specifically you're making an issue of?

And despite your claims, Ethan Peck doesn't look that much like Leonard Nimoy. Which was the reason why the originally had Peck grow a beard when he played Spock on Disco.

I rather like Celia as Uhura. Just as I like Zoe in the role. They’re both modern interpretations of the character and I know Zoe could sing as Celia has done, just like Nichelle did. And both modern Uhuras are a bit stronger than the original portrayal.

I just watched Subspace Rhapsody last night. She can sure sing, did not like the episode that much, because I don't like musicals. Going to watch the last episode tonight.

Sorry if this seems trite, but I don't really care if the current actors resemble their predecessors at all. Celia Rose Gooding is pretty fantastic in the role and that's all that counts. Keep watching, she may win you over. ;)

I don't care if they super-resemble their old actors, although I would prefer to have a similar style.

I think she's a perfectly fine Uhura, although i'd prefer for her hair to be styled more like Nichelle Nichols'. That would sell it more to me.

My least favorite one so far is Scotty. He physically looks fine, but why is he a little mousey guy? TOS Scotty was a straight up bad ass.

I don't have a problem with young Scotty not having full swagger yet, give him something to grow to. No, the real problem is seeing him at that age at all. He's much too young, Scotty is supposed to be 10 years older than Kirk!

I *love* Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura! They certainly create a unique take on the character, which feels much more nuanced and deep than anything they would have been able to do with either a secondary character on a 60s show or an ensemble character we only get to see for three movies. Gooding just makes the idea of this being a younger version of the character work so well. In my mind it’s totally believable that this Uhura will grow into the more seasoned, no-nonsense person we know from the original series. And I have to say, Gooding absolutely looks the part, too! Not some super close physical resemblance necessarily, but certainly that same wide-eyed, jovial and graceful look on the face. Genius casting, really.

That said, I must admit I love both Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldaña as Uhura as well. Although I think Gooding is more believable as a younger version of Nichols-Uhura.

What? I think they did great with Scotty, too! Martin Quinn has great comedic delivery and was my personal highlight in an all-around great season finale. I hope he’ll stick around for a while.

I don't much like musicals either on the general. But that episode is amazing. It is quickly becoming my favorite episode of Star Trek ever. And yeah, I just had to watch it again.

The character is fine and the actor does a good job as that character...

...the character just doesn't seem like Scotty.

Scotty shouldn't be the mousey nerd ducking out of the fight with a duct taped warp core... Scotty should be punching a Gorn in the face while duct taping a warp core.

I really don't see this Scotty getting into a bar fight with Klingons in the next 6 years...

That's part of it. He's too young, but also people keep talking about SNW in the sense of "but people will grow!" SNW Season 2 is 2260... it's 5 years to TOS. Yeah sure people can change, but it's a fairly short amount of time for MAJOR changes.
