Just re-watched Encounter at Farpoint

I enjoyed this episode, even if it wasn't the best that TNG had to offer. I think many people forget that Trek had not been on television in nearly 20 years and had to start somewhere. I think there was a good mix of showcasing the new ship, getting to briefly know the characters, and set the stage for the universe they are in.

I do like that they showed us the elevator in Engineering which they proceeded to use in...what...under five more episodes? ;)

Well, it wasn't just the pilot episode, but really, judging fashion shown to exist in the far future or far past is just begging for trouble. I'm sure the TNG folks would have some choice comments on the clothing people wear these days. And frankly the "transvestite" comment sounds more homophobic than anything else to me.
At the least just ridiculously limited in scope. Those Romans sure were a bunch of raging queens, weren't they?

I didn't care for grappler* Zorn's hair or Q's snotty attitude (which is what he was supposed to be) but I do like the introduction of the characters....

Take that back, I didn't like Worf much in those early seasons....(Actually, I'm not a big Worf fan in later seasons either)...

Now, Troi and Tasha....(Hmmmm....;))

*You know I'm doing this on purpose, right...?

I liked Encounter at Farpoint. Ditching the miniskirt on female crew members was a mistake though.

True, but ditching them on the males was not.

I disagree :D

Ditching them on both genders was a good move. How is one supposed to go through the Jeffries tubes in those things? Or... you, know, bend down to pick something up with any dignity?

As a descendant from a line of women who served in the military, I can tell you thank God for pants. They might have had to wear skirts as dress uniforms, but they sure has heck weren't taking care of the day's business in 'em.

It's not bad, especially considering it's the pilot episode.

I dare you to find a show that has everything in place and is perfect right from the pilot. Every TV show that's worth it's salt goes through changes and grows into itself through the years.

Isn't it Grappler, not Groppler?

Stargate Atlantis pilot was pretty perfect to me

Six Feet Under, except for the commercials which they decided not to keep running with, but that's hardly an imperfection.

I always thought it was an OK episode (unlike most of season 1). The story is pretty good, and from that perspective I can understand why it got a Hugo
It didn't get the Hugo. Farpoint was nominated, but The Princess Bride won. All Good Things got the Hugo later though.

Oh, and BTW, what's up with the remark about the Ferengi "they'll find you as tasty as their previous business partners"? Are we going to fanwank that as Picard just being facetious and teasing Zorn, or whatever his name was?

He may have not been speaking literally, he may have been implying how the Ferengi are known for not exactly having the best of business practices.

Is it just me, or has this episode taking a beating the last twenty years? Maybe it was just people I was talking to in 1987, 88, and 89, but I thought this was a popular episode in the early years of the series. (In fact I remember it was part of a TNG "best of" marathon one weekend around 1990.) But now it's hard for me to find anyway who admits to liking it.

I had fairly serious concerns about it from Day One, myself, and really hoped/assumed TNG would improve. Which, thankfully, it did.

You could say this was TNG's "The Cage" and I was waiting for WNMHGB.
