Encounter at Farpoint is classic Star Trek, IMO. Some of the characterizations are a little rough, but that's to be expected with a pilot.
At the least just ridiculously limited in scope. Those Romans sure were a bunch of raging queens, weren't they?Well, it wasn't just the pilot episode, but really, judging fashion shown to exist in the far future or far past is just begging for trouble. I'm sure the TNG folks would have some choice comments on the clothing people wear these days. And frankly the "transvestite" comment sounds more homophobic than anything else to me.
I liked Encounter at Farpoint. Ditching the miniskirt on female crew members was a mistake though.
True, but ditching them on the males was not.

Ditching them on both genders was a good move. How is one supposed to go through the Jeffries tubes in those things? Or... you, know, bend down to pick something up with any dignity?
It's not bad, especially considering it's the pilot episode.
I dare you to find a show that has everything in place and is perfect right from the pilot. Every TV show that's worth it's salt goes through changes and grows into itself through the years.
Isn't it Grappler, not Groppler?
It didn't get the Hugo. Farpoint was nominated, but The Princess Bride won. All Good Things got the Hugo later though.I always thought it was an OK episode (unlike most of season 1). The story is pretty good, and from that perspective I can understand why it got a Hugo
Oh, and BTW, what's up with the remark about the Ferengi "they'll find you as tasty as their previous business partners"? Are we going to fanwank that as Picard just being facetious and teasing Zorn, or whatever his name was?
I genuinely don't know how to gropple, though.

Come around my way and I'll teach you. We'll be like two proud Spartans, all sweaty and...
Hey, where'd you go?
