I've recently rediscovered the might that IS DS9 and I'm currently watch 2-3 episodes a night. I've just finished watching Nor the Battle to the Strong and just had to comment on the acting from Ciroc Lofton. The scene where Jake brakes down after talking to Bashir was absolutly magnificant. Some of the very, very best acting I've seen in Trek and this from someone who was the youngest member of the cast. All in all, Jake Sisko has to be one of the most rounded and well portrayed characters in DS9.

His performance was "above average" when it comes to television acting, but I would not exactly put him up there with Kelsey Grammar.
Hollywood is all about connections, and unfortunately besides Avery Brooks, no one there was willing to take him under their wing like the way studio heads have done with Mark Wahlberg, Colin Farrell and Zac Efron.

However, it is good of him to devote himself to college education and other interests to further his career goals outside of greedy Hollywood.

I always thought Lofton was an amazing actor in the later seasons. He was a very bad actor in Season 1 though. Don't recall off the top of my head when his acting stopped being bad, but it is remarkable how he went from not knowing how to act at all, to becoming a great actor all in the course of the same show.
I'd say Lofton is a lot better of an actor than Kelsey Grammar. I've seen Kelsey Grammar in numerous things and he always plays his different roles in an identical way each and every time. Lofton showed he has great acting range in FBTS.

I thought he was excellent in that episode as well. I always enjoyed watching him on screen somehow, but this is probably his single best performance.
Ciroc was okay. Nowhere as good as Avery or Nana, but good nonetheless.

I really liked Ciroc Lofton, he is my age and I surprised he didn't get better roles after DS9 
He WAS pretty good. His work was definitely a refreshing break from "standard teen/young adult" ensemble show acting" (i.e every single damned CW show). Yet he also, almost contradictorily, brought a refreshing naturalism to the role.
Unfortunately, particularly in the last season and a half, the writers rarely gave him anything of substance to do besides hang with Nog and tell us how much he loved his dad (and even THOSE got sparse - need more time recurring characters, you know?).

I've always enjoyed his work. He brought something different to DS9 that hadn't been seen before, and I wish we'd seen more of it. He was just a normal person. The son of the single most important man in the quadrant, but just a regular guy all the same (Compare him to Wesley's character for instance). In the early seasons, he manages to come across as just any normal kid, not somebody playing a kid in a sci-fi series surrounded by people in prosthetic heads - that takes some skill. Due in no small part to some good writing, he and Avery Brooks make you believe in their father/son setup from the off.

The last thing I saw him in was Of Gods And Men. While I wasn't massively keen on the film itself, it was good to see him playing a Vulcan character. So yeah, chalk me up as a fan

This was one thing that really, really surprised me. I thought Brooks and Lofton had great chemistry. Also, I found the father / son relationship very strong. Plus I felt they'd really found a direction for Jake. And one that was particularly interesting in that you've actually got a human character who, right from the start, isn't at all interested in joining Starfleet.
What I found particularly noticeable was that they made a brilliant move in having Jake stay aboard DS9 when it was conquered by the Dominion. Yet, it really went nowhere. And I just don't understand why. There was time enough (just dropped the Sons and Daughters parts with Alexander), and I think there was more than enough story material to work with.
Granted, the creative process is a tricky beast. It's entirely possible they tried to have more Jake in there but just couldn't get it to work or felt it didn't work. Still, it's really a shame, I think.
I've just finished another run through DS9, and I found myself lamenting how Jake drifted into background character status in the later seasons. I started wishing that Jake had done what Nog did in reverse - gotten interested in business and asked to "apprentice" under Quark. Watching those two characters together in "The Sound of Her Voice," when Jake is trying to learn about "nefarious characters" - I could just see him being intrigued by Quark's machinations. And I think it would be interested to see a human who is actually acquisitive for a change - it was one of the things I liked about Vash. She wanted stuff and wasn't afraid to skirt the line to get it.
I could see Jake working under Quark running the holosuites, broadening their use and appeal to include more "holodeck" and less "brothel" fare, eventually buying them out from Quark or opening his own somewhere else on the station, eventually becoming an economic rival for Quark. I just sounds like fun to me, and a little more interesting than making him a writer/reporter.

He was a fine actor. He just didn't have enough to do.

He was very good in that episode and showed how war is not a business to be taken into lightly and how sometimes sheer luck can save the day. That was good.
He was a good actor, and good at playing Jake, but he simply didn't get much of anything to do in DS9.

Kelsey Grammar always plays the same 'character' - himself. You know, quite possibly the most arrogant and annoying actor that came out of anything related to Cheers.
Can't stand him. And not only that, he is WAY overrated.

He could take lessons in subtlety from every single one of his cast mates. Though I will say his voice work in animation is generally good. As long as I don't have to see him spazzing all over a set, I'm fine with him.
But give me Cirroc or any one of a thousand other actors over Kelsey Grammer any day.

I may be in the minority here, but I always enjoyed the way Kelsey Grammer acted as Frasier. The character of Frasier was so pompous and over the top that I found that style fit him.
