Just give us new TOS

Well how about this as far as the Look of TOS. Start with Captain April. New crew, new props, etc. You wouldn't have to worry about CGI faces or anything. Film this using modern techniques. Maybe do a few episodes that would test out the future technology. For example do a time travel episode back to the Eugenics war and have interactions with Khan. Used a body double, CGI face, and sound-alike. Just as a test. (An idea for this episode could be is that the crew has to let millions die in order to preserve the future. In CotEoF Kirk had to let Edith Keeler die. Imagine having to let an entire planet endure war and death)

Then go into Pike's first five year mission. First you'd have to figure out where "The Cage" fits in. Modify your effects and set designs to look a bit more like what was seen in "The Cage." The next season make them look a bit more like it. So by the time you arrive at "The Cage" The styles used fit with what is seen in that episode. Then you can slowly move the effects back to modern values.

During Kirk's first five years start mnoving towards what was seen in WNMHGB. I say keep the HD quality that they did in the TOS-R but loos the new CGI crap. The ship looks fake. Get the 11 footer of build a new one that looks like what was used during TOS and use film that. Then us it to modify original footage to allow it to bcome HD. For example there are times that parts of the ship look like there are being "eaten away" because of the bluescreen. Fill that stuff in with the new footage. The you now have TOD that is HD and keep the original footage.

Now after the third season of TOS(fourth year of Kirk's first five years, in my book). Slowly move back towards modern effects or better yeat the look of TMP. Then for Phase II you could use modern values.

It's not really that hard to figure out. Sure the CGI faces might be expensive. And it probably wouldn't be done unless someone else was in charge(or even owning) Star Trek. But hey it's an idea.

Re: re-created TOS series - production values

1. Re-do TOS, but stylistically do it exactly as it was done before - exact same designs, exact same uniforms, same cardboard sets, same props etc.
Wow. That is some dream. Your dream to re-create a series made 40 years ago with the same production values.

etc..

Read the entire post next time -

There seems to be 3 or 4 basic approaches -

1. Re-do TOS, but stylistically do it exactly as it was done before - exact same designs, exact same uniforms, same cardboard sets, same props etc.
...
4. Redo the design, bring it up to date & recast the actors - essentially a nu-BSG / JJ-Trek approach

So, just to clarify - I am actually suggesting approach #4

re-created TOS series thoughts

Sorry I didn't realize it was not YOUR idea.
I am new to the forum and hadn't heard of this idea before. Whoever's idea it is as one of the 3 or 4 basic approaches sure is outlandish.

I was only commenting on _THAT_ approach initially.

You can only watch those 79 episodes so many times... There is only one setting, one collection of characters I care about - Kirk, Spock, Bones et all on the starship Enterprise.

...but I wan't MORE - new stories

For those characters you do care about you have 79 episodes, 1 season of ST:TAS and 6 feature films. That is it.
More new stories with those characters would realistically be in book form novel or graphic novel.

As far as the approach for a new Trek series you would like:
4. Redo the design, bring it up to date & recast the actors - essentially a nu-BSG / JJ-Trek approach
is being done by Paramount with JJAbrahams Trek 2.0 reimagining. The success of that feature film will most likely bring another feature film.
It is hard to imagine that those same film actors would start to act a weekly TV series based on that film.

I think that a TOS-based TV series that is close in design and style to the original - yeah, cheese and all - could succeed on a niche channel such as SyFy. It would be fun - produce it in Vancouver for the kind of money spent on the Stargate shows, release it quickly on DVD and Paramount could keep generating a nice piece of change for themselves.

Unfortunately, that undercuts their strategy of making Trek into a series of event movies, so it ain't in the cards.

Oh, and hang April - that character's an also-ran, a non-entity. if you're going to use characters other than Kirk and that crew, at least trade on actual canonical characters that more than a few folks might be familiar with. Pike would be a good choice.

Hey! We agree on something! I would just make one small change though --

I would beg Harlan Ellison to write a new episode and then promptly re-write him (I'd have a flock of flying monkees involved in the plot somehow) and keep all the royalties!

It would be one of those "Circle of Life" kind of things...:guffaw:

Oh yeah, definitely you try something like that. Let us know how it comes out... if you're ever able. :guffaw:
