Just For Speculation...

FabiusMaximus

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Based on the rumors, the musings of this board, fanwank, etc.

Spock (LN) bounces around in time to stop Nero’s interference with key events, places and people in the Trek timeline. Device used to jump through time unclear as well as Nero’s motive, but both characters from the canonical future and both harming the timeline (albeit one with nefarious plans the other with good intent).

Scenario#1: Nero seizes opportunity to kill James T. Kirk by offing his father and very pregnant mother. Spock(LN), once he gets to the point in time, helps to prevent their murder by enlisting the help of a passing Vulcan ship (of which he would have knowledge since passengers aboard the ship include his mother and father and perhaps even Spock himself as a young boy) They not only thwart assassination attempt but are there for the birth of JT Kirk. Nice moment for action and historical significance as well as potential humor with young Spock possibly holding a crying infant Kirk (first raised eyebrow?)

Scenario#2: Nero jumps ahead in the timeline to Kirk and Spock’s Academy days. His plan broadens and becomes more evil. With futuristic weapons at his disposal, Nero decides to destroy Vulcan itself. Spock (LN) knows his home planet will need the help of Starfleet (of whom the Vulcans are still distrustful) and thereby goes to younger Spock (ZQ) who is at the Academy. In order to secure their assistance Spock (LN) tries to rush the bond between himself and JT Kirk whom ZQ has just “ratted out” following the KM incident. Once the relationship is established ZQ and Kirk are able to persuade Starfleet to intervene at the right time and save the planet. Again this would be a nice opportunity to watch how the two opposite characters overcome their differences and become friends.

Scenario#3: Nero tries again at a later future. This time he tries to build an unlikely alliance (through deception) with the Klingons to wage an all out war on the Federation which could potentially destroy everyone – save the Romulans. When LN arrives the situation is already grim and he realizes that in order to defeat Nero he must put together a team he can trust to stop him. Here we would see the rounding up of the familiar characters. ZQ would be serving aboard Pike’s Enterprise and LN would use him to get Kirk, McCoy, Scotty etc. This scenario would serve as the bulk of the film as we find out who these people are and how they defeat Nero. For me, Star Trek is not about space battles and so forth, but there would be a great potential for it in this scenario.

At film’s end Nero would be destroyed and LN would return to his future with all intact except for a few differences. Meanwhile the new timeline would have been established and the new crew could have amazing adventures not beholden to what has come before.
In essence old would be new again. Omega would become Alpha. And the adventure would begin again.

Good try, but can you see from a continuity and pacing point of view how the time-travel plot contrivances can complicate a good yarn and make it unbelievable?

The simpler and more understandable the plot, the more successful this movie will be.

"Complicated"? It has a linear throughline, it has a lot of potential for set pieces and intriguing windows into previously unseen areas of Trek history, it makes allowances for alterations to established Trek that can be understood as the film goes along-that scenario sounds pretty cool, or at least workable. I could live with that as the plot. I raise my tranya to Fabius.

Bear in mind that "time travel" is NOT FORMALLY ESTABLISHED as part of the plot of this film. This is speculation, based upon the fact that there are two "Spocks" in the film.

AICN started this rumor, and it's still going. MAYBE it's true. Maybe it's total BS, and the story is something else entirely.

All you REALLY know is that the film is set in multiple timeframes. That doesn't mean that anyone's TRAVELING through those timeframes, does it? Except in the way we all do... one day at a time. ;)

I'd lay HEAVY odds that Old and New Spock won't share a single frame ... unless it's a "dissolve"...

Then again, I'm not claiming that's anything but speculation on my part. Your mileage may vary. ;)

I predict the movie will be shown in theaters and seen by people.

If it is a turkey will there be dressing, cranberries and mashed potatoes?

section9 -- Yes, this does sound a bit convoluted in a brief synopsis. I think it would play out more organic over a two hour movie, provided the means of time-jumping and the motive of the villain were made clear.

Cary L. Brown -- Of course, you may be right, the use of the older Spock may just be for framing the story etc., but I was thinking of a possible "out" for the writers in terms of story structure as well as their intent to remain as faithful to canon as possible. If Nero and Spock go back in time then any changes in the timeline could easily explain changes to character and events that are a part of Trek lore. I've seen infinite posts of who, what, where and especially when over the past few weeks and this might help to explain all that(why do the characters look and act the way they do in this film when they weren't that way before). Also, if we are looking at doing sequels for the new crew, the timeline change would allow for anything possible to happen without interference from the forty years of original story telling.

Mordock -- Thanks. And in response, I'll raise my glass in hopes of what we all want -- an excellent Star Trek movie.

Your ending to Scenario 1 is reminiscent of certain key scenes in John Ford's pro Trek novel, The Final Reflection...

Young Sarek, Amanda and Spock factored in there too...
