Just finished "Tales of Dominion War"

I just finished Tales of Dominion War. Surprisingly it was good. Usually I don't like short story format. ( last one I read "Distant Shores" of VOY was trash ) but Tales of Dom. War was surprising reveleation to me. Every short story had its own dynamic , well crafted characters , filling holes of war period here and there plus not contradicting with existing cannon. I wonder there was a close supervision by Trek writers and producers while editing this book. Like JMS had done with Babylon 5 "cannon" books/novels....Well whatever along with "Battle of Betazed" ( which I have read last month ) my curiosity of Dominion War has been satisfied.

Now I am considering to buy "A Time for War...Peace" from Keith R.A. DeCandido. ( editor of "Tales.." ) What do you think ? Is it good ?

^ If you're going to pick up A Time For War, A Time For Peace (which had both nice moments and serious flaws), I'd recommend reading David Mack's A Time To Kill and A Time To Heal first. They immediately precede ATFW,ATFP in-story, and are both outstanding reads - A Time To Heal, especially.

Glad you enjoyed the anthology! I'm quite proud of the work we did on TotDW, and it's nice to see it appreciated. :)

I hope you enjoy A Time for War, a Time for Peace, but as Cicero said, it's the last book in a series. Having said that, you absolutely don't need to read the previous eight books to appreciate the final one, and the book is as much a Nemesis prequel as it is a conclusion to the A Time to... maxiseries.

Thank you. I enjoyed ToDW quite a lot. I know to give credit when it is due. I would like to know if there is anything related to Star Trek you are working right now ?

dude, learn to spell 'canon' for all our sakes. just the one N in the middle. no doubt some wit will soon suggest we shoot you out a caNNon for mis-spelling it.

KRAD's next Trek novel is 'Klingon Empire: A Burning House' due in Feb IIRC.

Sorry. English is not my native language.

right, sorry, didn't want to come off hostile, but it's a common mistake even among English-speakers and it gets people irritated around here.

salaam.

No, the production staffs of the shows were too busy making the shows to pay much attention to the books. On all Trek novels and anthologies, it's the responsibility of the studio's licensing department to make sure that the books remain consistent with onscreen canon.

Quite a bit. :) My most recent Trek novel came out last month: Q & A, a TNG novel that is, basically, the ultimate Q story. Next one is, as stated upstream, Klingon Empire: A Burning House, which focuses on the breadth of the day-to-day of the Klingon Empire from a variety of perspectives.

The one I'm currently working on is a short novel for the Myriad Universes miniseries, which will be six short novels in two trade paperbacks (same format as this year's Mirror Universe books), all of which will look at alternate timelines -- basically, Trek "what if?" stories.

I've also got a story in next year's Mirror Universe anthology Shards and Shadows called "Family Matters," and I've got a story in the newly released TNG anniversary anthology The Sky's the Limit called "Four Lights."

I have seen Q&A but didn't pick up ( yet :) ). Klingon Empire: A Burning House sounds promising. Klingon way of looking the galaxy and other races has been ( not always but mostly interesting ) in my opinion. One of my favorite stories in TotDW was "A Song Well Sung" from Robert Greenberer.

Right now I am in San Diego in fact ( for last 8 months- oh "salaam" is Arabic. In Turkey we speak Turkish , a complately different language with latin alphabet. Thanks for the hailing anyway captcalhaun:) - ) Mr. DeCandido , are you coming California for a convention or something ?

^ There's a tie-in there, actually....

A Burning House is the followup to several tales I've done that have focused on Captain Klag of the I.K.S. Gorkon: TNG: Diplomatic Implausibility in 2001, The Brave and the Bold Book 2 in 2002, three books under the I.K.S. Gorkon banner in 2003 and 2005, and a short story in Tales from the Captain's Table. "A Song Well Sung" is a prequel to all those, written by Bob. (I only didn't write that because I really wanted to write the fall of Betazed for TotDW, so I farmed it out to Bob, who did an excellent job.)

And while I do sometimes come out to California for conventions, I don't have plans to do so any time soon, sadly.

Fall of Betazed ( "The Ceremony of Inocence Drowned" ) was nicely tied up with "Battle of Betazed". Good work again in the existing storyframe. I will keep an eye for IKS Gorkon series if I find time.

Too bad. Anyway take care.

I'm fascinated that you can so readily assign one recent ST anthology as "trash" while liking another of similar size and scope, especially when a diverse range of authors is involved in each book - and some authors represented in both. Are you sure part of your bias wasn't because you generally prefer TNG and DS9 over VOY? ;)

That may be so. But I think the stories of VOY being seperate and stand-alone types are also important factors. Not to mention there are contradictions and less long plot in VOY stories. ( at least for me ). I like VOY to a certain degree but as you said I am a big fan of TOS , TNG and DS9.

I like TOS, DS9, and TNG a heck of a lot more than I like Voyager, but I really liked Distant Shores. Voyager on TV: generally badly written, imho. Voyager in print: sometimes very well written, and this was one of those times.

Not to say that there weren't some great stories in Tales of the Dominion War, or the other Trek fiction anthologies of recent years, of course....

I just finished rereading TODW the other day (I often read a ST story before I go to bed...). I love the short story antologies, but "Tales ... " is one of the best. "Stone Cold Truths" by Peter David is rather chilling, IMO.

Are you talking about the show or the book here? Becuase I don't remember there being any kind of arcs or long plots or anything in ToDW.

There was no long story arcs in TotDW but all stories were referancing main storyline ( Dominion War ) themselves one way to another. That's I liked.
