Jumping back in to DS9 Relaunch (Where to start?)

Hey all!

I used to be a near-daily poster, but then life happened. How are folks?

So I'm coming up on a vacation and I want to jump back in to the DS9 relaunch. I had read from "Avatar" all the way to "Fearful Symmetry" and enjoyed a LOT of these books.

Now I want to jump back in... would I be lost if I just started in on Typhon Pact seres? Or do I need to go back and read "The Soul Key" and "Never-ending Sacrifice."? My last read was in 2008 so I don't remember everything that was happening... I just recall that Fearful Symmetry was so dark and left such a bad taste in my mouth that I stopped reading and didn't read Soul Key or continue in the series.

The Soul Key is kinda important, but pretty much everything will get recaped later on anyway so skipping it should be possible. The Never-Ending Sacrifice has nothing to do with the main story, but is a great read.

My vote would be skip Soul Key, maybe just read about it on Memory Beta. The Typhon Pact books are a big jump forward and you're going to be lost at that point, just like we all were. So you might as well just start there instead of trying to get back into the end of the previous "unfinished" storyline.

I'd start with the Destiny-trilogy - there isn't much DS9 in there (just Ezri IIRC) but it's the major event in TrekLit and sort of sets the tone for the subsequent books. And it's a good point to get back into TrekLit as you don't really need to have much prior knowledge.

If you're really just interested in DS9, then jump ahead to Rough Beasts of Empire and go from there. Definitely pick up The Never-Ending Sacrifice, though. It's set apart from the main relaunch narrative, just makes some references but it's an immensely rewarding read.

Yeah, if you didn't like Fearful Symmetry, I'd skip The Soul Key. But definitely read The Never-Ending Sacrifice because it is excellent. It's a standalone, so if you don't remember what was going on, it doesn't really matter.

I'd strongly recommend reading Destiny before you start Typhon Pact. I'd read all of them - Soul Key, Sacrifice, Destiny, then Typhon Pact.

I strongly recommend reading Soul Key if you love the DS9 relaunch, but mainly because its going to be your last chance at experiencing the *real* DS9 you love and know. Subsequent DS9, for me anyway, doesn't have that tight, unified feeling of continuity. DS9 becomes more of just a setting and a loose collection of characters and events afterwards.

Over Xmas i started a reread of everything post TNG. Started with the A Time To series and read everything in the relaunch series. Loved going back over some of the older novels and reminding myself how things moved on after the series finished on TV.

The Never-Ending Sacrifice is a stand-alone story that mostly takes place during the run of the TV series (from about Season 2 onwards, it follows up on the episode with the Cardassian child who was adopted by a Bajoran couple and is raised on Bajor), and ends in the relaunch era.

But you might want to jump back to the 3-book Worlds Of Deep Space Nine series and start from there, as that starts the second phase of DS9's relaunch that goes to Soul Key, and won't be resolved until the later novels Sacrifice of Fire & Ascendance. The reason that I say that is that the World's books finish a few short threads from the previous set of books that ended with Unity, but they setup plot points that are visited in the later DS9 and TNG books

I loved the Worlds of Deep Space Nine. I don't think I need to re-read them, they were really absorbing short stories (I especially loved the Ferenginar one for some reason. Really painted picture, but Keith is a great writer).

I ended up hopping on Amazon and bought everything from Soul Key onward .

I've been away for so long that I don't remember a lot of the stories and was wondering if there's a site out there that has the order of books and a synopsis of each one that could help me get back on track.

I'm gonna add to the voices of you need to read Never Ending Sacrifice. It's a fantastic book that gives a great alternate POV to DS9 by threading lots of different episodes/books together through the eyes of one Cardassian.

If you just wanted DS9, you should def read Plagues of Night/Raise the dawn, and the first three books of The Fall are all set either on DS9 or Cardassia. It would leave you with an unfinished arc if you don't read four and five though, which are largely TNG/TTN, although a few characters like Nog do feature here and there.
