well yes i agree with the both of you that the movie has more problems than just this edit . to each his own. it is just a sloppy editing job to me.
I didn't like the way he cut from Scotty shouting to Spock on the bridge after he fell out of the water tubing.
Something never seems right with that cut..
you know at the very end of the film after all the excitment the crew is getting ready to depart on their new adventures, crew members are stating that systems are ready and so forth. like weapons ready ( whats that about ) communications ready. but the problem is that spock has not come onto the bridge as the first officer and kirk has not even come out of the turbo lift, so all that dialog just is awkward!
More than that "jump cut," the thing that got me at the start of the film is how Spock steps into the turbolift in engineering, and in about 2 seconds later is on the bridge. Just seems way too fast, especially if the ship is so much bigger.
Come on. What does that have to do with changing the ship?Spock was in engineering. While they changed a lot about the ship - such as not bothering to build an actual engineering set - it seems engineering is still in the secondary hull.
But looking at the history of Trek, I can see that the length of time characters spend in turbolifts is usually directly related to how much dialogue they need to get out before reaching their destination. And given how gee-whiz-flash-bang-zoom this movie was, having Spock standing alone in the turbolift for 10 seconds would've been like crashing into a brick wall.

That was my thought. Although, to be fair, American movies try to disguise jumpcuts because they can be pretty abrasive. They weren't in this case, though, since most people didn't notice it.
While I can accept "fast" turbolifts, the speed at which he gets from engineering to the bridge is just way too fast. It's beyond ludicrous speed from Spaceballs, as I think about it... I guess he went to plaid.![]()
i agree it is awkward like someone who had never edited film or video tape before was in charge.I found the editing to be pretty annoying. Wasn't my pace, I guess. I felt that they cut away from shots at the wrong time, there where many jump cuts, and yeah well the nice editing glitch with 3 minutes to Romulus.

The fleet goes to warp, Sulu forgets about the technobabble, the Enterprise goes to warp. CUT TO: sickbay, where McCoy and Kirk enter, Kirk gets unconscious. CUT TO: bridge, Sulu states that they reached maximum warp. Pike asks Chekov for his name, and orders him to inform the crew. Chekov informs the crew, he also says that they will be arriving at Vulcan in 3 minutes, and then CUT TO: sickbay, Kirk hears the word "lightning storm" and wakes up. And then he runs to Uhura and to the bridge, and the ship arrives at Vulcan.
The INTENTION was to have a time passage, because we see McCoy redressed, doing different things, and acting like Kirk was unconscious for some time. But the EXECUTION in the editing room was sloppy, resulting in what we see in the final movie, where there is no time passage.
The only place where you could fill more time in is between Kirk getting unconscious and Sulu stating that they reached maximum warp. But I always felt that in Trek they reach maximum warp in under a minute.
