July Writing Challenge: KAIJU!

For this month, we shall harken back to the days when a challenge consisted of one word and everyone was inspired to write something truly heartfelt. So without furher ado, here is your one word:

KAIJU!!!

This, of course, is the Japanese word for "giant monster", so your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have your favorite Trek characters confront the Toho movie monster of your choice. And you're perfectly free to tell a heartwarming story...or, you can just have the monster smashing up Starfleet HQ, whatever.

There are, as always, rules:

1. You have a word range this time. No more than 5000, no less than 3500. Since I like contests to start the first of the month, the deadline for entering is midnight July 28th, 2010. The remaining days are set aside for voting.

2. Canon is welcome. OCs are welcome. AUs are welcome. Anything remotely associated with Star Trek is welcome.

3. However, only monsters from this list are welcome:

No Pokemon, no Digimon, and for pete's sake nothing from Yu-Gi-Oh or Bakugan. Nothing outside that list, which is substantial.

4. Saying you've never seen the monsters in movies is not an excuse for not entering. The list contains all the bios and stats you need, and you're already thinking about what Trek characters to use, so this is a matter of two minutes of research.

You have your marching orders, kids. I want ridiculous numbers of entries, so get writing.

Here is a question. I plan on using King Kong in my story. Am I free to use any version of Kong(1920ish, 2000ish) as far as back story, or am I stuck using the Toho version.

I'll change it if I have to, but I just noticed it on the list so I had to ask.

OK, I think we can call the winner on this challenge now. Nobody's going to have ANY chance against gojirob. ;)

I assume that's a typo and you meant “1930-ish.” 1933, to be exact. Unless Kong had an uncredited cameo in Willis O'Brien's The Lost World.

Sounds like a great idea. If only I could write worth a turd.

Yeah 1933 sounds about right. I forgot when the first King Kong was released.

true! but ill take a crack at it!

2 questions...

1) Asilly question, but im assuming only new entries?

2) And ONLY that list? no other giant Japanese monster? such as the Bijuu, nine tailed beasts?

I wasn't able to devote time to the last challenge, but this one I'll definitely participate in, even though I'm not big on Japanese monsters.

Okay, I haven't had a chance to add anything since I posted the contest (the computer I was using decided to go on vacation immediately afterward), so now I can answer some questions, but first I forgot to mention that when you post your stories in the forum you need to post links to them in this thread. You may think it goes without saying, but it should be said anyway.

Sanji Himura: Yes, you have to use the Toho version of King Kong. (Which doesn't suck. He went one on one with the Big G.)

KobayashiMaru13: Yes, only that list, which has a good bunch of monsters on it. However, if you already have a story that matches the challenge criteria and you can edit it into the word range, you can use it all you like.

Valeris: Don't worry. It's a one time only deal and you can go right back to ignoring them afterward.

And yes, part of my master plan was to lure Gojirob into entering. MWAHAHAHAHA!

Okay, kids, back to it!

I don't recall anything like that happening...?

(PM me if you were serious, go ahead and say it here if you were being sarcastic. ;) )

Man, and I've got one that I've been focusing on that I could almost shoehorn into this challenge. Just two problems, it's an original fiction(so not trek) and it's already WAY to long and not done yet. lol. Guess I'll miss another challenge.

Well don't give up quite so quickly! You sure you can't come up with a new concept before the deadline?

Honestly, I've had tunnel vision focused on Katana lately. Some people have even tried convincing me to publish it, so thats been on my mind too. If inspiration hits me at random, as it sometimes does, then maybe I'll get something in. But I'm not sure at the moment.

One piece of advice : Monsters are cool, but they don't have to appear in a story to have an impact. Just their possible presence lurking or the aftermath of their attacks can be a story. Imagine if the deliveries of quadro-triticale were laced with remnants of Biollante or Legion?

Maybe, maybe not, but I'm looking for them to appear in the stories. Big and loud.

Remember back when a draft of the first Transformers movie got leaked and people who read it lost their minds because they thought it indicated it would just be people-drama and the robots would be incidental? You gotta have big transforming robots in a movie called "Transformers."

Well, this is a Trek/Giant Monster contest, and as runner I declare that there must be Trek and Giant Monsters, not just evidence of same.
