Julian Assange arrested

^ His actions prove his intent. The mere fact that he leaked this information to the public is proof that he really doesn't care who gets ahold of it or what they use it for. That is extreme carelessness and recklessness at the very least.

Having it in for another country isn't against the law.

Assange didn't steal these cables, they were given to WikiLeaks. If an American was given some sensitive information on Iranian diplomats and published it on the Web would Americans be happy to see the American extradited to Iran and charged with espionage?

I don't remember there being a huge outcry in America when Assange was releasing information on Peru, Kenya etc.

Show me the law that he has broken.

Westerwelle's "Chief of Staff" fired.
OK I should have said 'show me a case of an innocent person who has been harmed by these leaks'.

That guy was fired for doing similar things to what Brad Manning did. Or do you think it is alright for a German to hand over confidential documents to an American, but wrong if an American hands over documents to an Australian?

Indeed.

One might just as easily argue that intimidating with threats of violence to an Australian citizen is itself an act of terrorism..

^ Or, OTOH, prosecuting a perfectly legitimate rape charge just might not be.

Even if Assange isn't a terrorist, that doesn't mean he's not a rapist.

Even the women involved in the (spurious) case are saying he is no rapist.

It revolves around consensual sex where he allegedly failed to use a condom.

How many people do you know of who have been convicted of rape on those grounds?

I also wonder why Americans think they have jurisdiction over the whole world. Julian Assange wasn't in America when he received these files, he wasn't in the USA when they were published, he owes no loyalty to America whatsoever.

And your diplomats are in possession of stolen German data. Should they be turned over to Germany?

In fact I have no doubt that the USA receives a lot of stolen info from other countries. Are you going to hand over every single person who received it?

As far Julian Assange receiving stolen property

a) He only received copies of the documents which would seem to suggest that this is more akin to copyright violation.

b) However intellectual property laws only relate to unauthorized reproduction of certain kinds of commercial information not to government documents which by law cannot be copyrighted.
