Joss Whedon to direct The Avengers

There's also the Leader/Samuel Sterns from the Hulk movie. Since TIH is in-continuity he might be in it.

Avenger's Assemble! aka suck on it DC

This might have been the most fangasmic moment for an audience of superhero movie buffs since Christian Bale met Brandon Routh onstage at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards.

Why are people assuming that this will be the final cast of The Avengers? Whedon said that he is working on an outline for the script (which likely means a rewrite), and he doesn't start filmling till next year, so there is still some time for other characters to be added and cast, and I think it's fairly likely - given Whedon's past - for other female characters to be added, not just because Joss is a feminist, but also because he generally likes having a balance to work with in terms of male and female characters.

^At risk of sounding like a stuck record, Whedon inevitably turns everything he touches in to River Tam Beats Up Everyone. Thankfully, he isn't writing this, only directing.

This, for instance, explains why Echo wasn't brutally killed in Dollhouse's sixth episode.

Yeah, but you can be sure it's part of his contract that he has a big say in the writing of the script too. Hell, considering his history, Marvel probably WANTED him to contribute to the writing.

^I'm sure. Let's just hope he has some sort of filter before we end up with Widow beating up the Hulk while Cap, Iron Man and Thor sit around discussing their feelings.

Let's just hope the studio gives Whedon the freedom to bring his brand of awesome to the table, but reins him in when he tries to rip our hearts out at the end.

As far as I'm concerned, any weakenesses he may have at creating big spectacle and epic action is MORE than offset by the wit and inventiveness he brings to the storytelling.

Although frankly I thought the end of Serenity demonstrated that he can do epic action pretty well too. There seems to be this fear that he's going to turn this into another small, cheap-looking Fantastic Four movie or something. And I just can NOT see that happening.

^I could have sworn that Zak Penn was writing it. He still needs some sort of filter as good as he is.

Hermiod, Whedon is rewriting Penn's script (hence the outline I mentioned above); this was revealed back when Whedon's name was first mentioned/unofficially attached to the project.

^Okay, I must have misremembered.

Joss is a great writer, but he needs someone like a Tim Minear or a Mo Tancheroen to balance him out sometimes.
