Joss Whedon in final negotiations to direct "The Avengers"

You know when I first saw this thread I thought they were remaking the British TV show again. It confused me as to why Joss Whedon was involved, but if it's American superheroes running around in spandex and shouting witty one-liners after braining folks, then he's sort of a no-brainer choice (i.e., an apt one).

The most mysterious thing for me is why some people have such antipathy towards him. I truely do not understand it.

Fortunately, I also don't really care.

In a nutshell, there's just a smugness about his writing that rubs me the wrong way. Smugness is rarely an endearing trait to me.

I liked Firefly, but Mal Reynolds did still piss me off at times, particularly the scenes where the undercurrent is 'yeah, ISN'T THIS GUY AWESOME? AND WITTY? BOO-YAH, ANOTHER GENIUS LINE FROM JOSS WHEDON.'

Seems to me that's as much in the viewing as the writing. But at least it's a coherent position, which is more than many are willing to offer. So cool.

And there's Alien 4. I'm not sure which I'm less forgiving of: Him screwing it up, or him stiffing the blame on other people. But one disgresses.

I've only seen Alien 4 once, which is only slightly fewer than I've seen the other movies. Honestly, Aliens is the only one of the bunch I really found to be superior; the rest were decent but nothing special. Alien 3 is the one that put me to sleep; at least AR didn't do that.

Yes, it was quite the devastating argument. I'm not surprised you were unable to counter it (and I don't mean this as a knock. It's a rock solid argument). It is indicative of how people can become so wrapped up in charisma that you don't realize how bad your behaving until its too late.

The Firefly stuff is fluff, nothing more. There is nothing peer-reviewed in them at all. Books, as written, do not automatically qualify as "academic". Not unless they are peer-reviewed.
