I've been trying to find some article quotes to include at the header of various articles on "Memory Alpha", including one for each of the hosts of Dax (some were harder than others). I rewatched "Equilibrium" and "Field of Fire" the other night, looking for a good one to use for Joran (which I found), but watching them (plus "Facets"), I do think they were a little inconsistent about how they treated him:
-I think "Equilibrium" is probably the better of the two episode, in terms of a mystery for the character to solve (though I thought the Vulcan serial killer was pretty interesting and worked pretty well). I do think Joran was depicted a bit inconsistently in the three episodes in which he "appeared". The guy in "Equilibrium" seemed to be a bad-tempered artist who couldn't handle failure, rejection, or distraction. You get the impression that killing the doctor was heat-of-the-moment crime of passion. The guy in "Field of Fire" is more of a cold-blooded Hannibal Lecter type, who apparently killed THREE people, rather than just one, probably premeditated. He's a bit more of a cliché devil on Ezri's shoulder here so he wasn't terribly compelling. The guy that inhabited Sisko in "Facets" was just a nutball. Not much to say about him.
I did notice a few other things with the whole Joran debacle:
-Is the Dax symbiont legally or morally responsible for things a joined Trill does? You could raise the same question about the lack of concern that the joined Verad showed for Dax in "Invasive Procedures".
-Joran's memories were supposedly blocked for decades to cover up what happened, implying that Curzon lived out his life never knowing of Joran, though in "Field of Fire", Joran says "Curzon and Jadzia didn't know what to do with me."
-If Ezri can just conjured up this imaginary Joran that she can talk to and will talk back whenever she wants, what was the point of that whole ritual in "Facets" that required a guardian and her friends' bodies? Seems to be Ezri's way would've been a much safer way of interacting with someone like Joran.
-So does everybody know about Joran? "Equilibrium" implied that Sisko and Bashir would keep the secret, but in "Facets", Quark apparently knows about him! Did they turn around and screw the Trill commission over after the fact?
What do you think?
